This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Could you please give me a contact for someone in Silsden who can tell me about the textile mills of the first half of the 20th century. I am particularly interested in a mill which may have been owned by someone called Knox. I believe my grandfather worked there.

Thank you. Andrew Watson - born and bred in Addingham and now living in Lincolnshire.

John Knox`s mill in silsden was in the same street as C.H.Flechers and Berry and Fletchers and shared the same building complex. It was one of the first mills in Silsden to modernize to shuttle less looms. In the late 1970`Knox`s joined with several other companys who moved into Knox`s buildingss and tried to ward of cheap imports. I think the firm closed in the mid 1980s after struglin for years. The site is now occupied by houses.happy :)

Thank you for these replies.
My grandfather was Walter Muir Watson and he began work with John Knox sometime between 1891 and 1901. Was John Knox set up at this time? I ask because I have a link with the name Knox in Glasgow, which is where my grandfather came from. He boarded in Silsden at 10 Skipton Road and then 38 Bolton Road before marrying in Glasgow in 1909. At some stage (perhaps on marriage) he moved to Daisy Hill House. I believe he worked later at Waterloo Mill (Is that linked to Knox?) before setting up his own mill in partnership with a Mr. Lambert at Townhead Mill in Addingham. When was this? All I know is that it was before 1932 when he died. Any information would be much appreciated.
Incidentally my father was James (Jim) Watson and he was a manager at CH Fletchers for 14 years until 1974.

I am also interested in the mill of John Knox as I believe he is related.

Anyone know of the graves of any of the Knoxs or any possible living contacts please drop me a line.

Or else anything in general about the mill or photos of Silsden, etc .. would be most appreciated.

happy :)

This illuminated scroll used to hang in my mother's house. John McLaren was, I believe, an uncle of my grandfather and a manager at the mill. Any info would be welcome. www.flickr.com/photos/23892853@N00/2840535443/

knoxs moved to the very top end of the airedale shed 1990 and run for approx 2 years then went bust. i now this is correct because i emptied the lower shed of allo the surpless machines and moved most of the usable machines into the top or to macklesfield then in 92/93 i bought the majority of what was left at auction. some of the looms were bought buy a very nice asian family from manchester, who were going to send them to pakistan, hope this is of help ?

It's on the 1938 OS Map of Silsden which you can see here www.silsden.net/useful/silsdenmap_1938.htm

When you get to the page click on the map and you will get a flash version which you can zoom into (it will take a while to load)

Gazzer,
I am interested in the photo of John Knox's retirement which you provided. The caption is cut off. Do you have the remainder of the words? Also, do you know the date?

The missing words are
"from his father, made prsentations to him on Thursday".

There is no date on the cutting.

Did you know any of the Swales family from Addingham

Gazzer,
Thank you.
The name Swales is vaguely familiar from when I grew up in the village in the fifties, but that is all I am afraid.

In the 50s there was a cycle shop run by a Mr Swales on the same row of shops as the Conservative Club. Is it called Briggate? about four buildings up from the club.I think he had a son whose nickname was SWISH SWALES.
Also there was a girl from Addingham named ELLEN SWALES who was in my class at Silsden secondary School.

Ellen is my auntie and I think the bike shop was run by her auntie in the 70's whose son is Jack Swales, former Silsden milkman
