This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Its not the quantity that's the problem, its the quality. If a take-away is any good it will thrive in Silsden. Thank god they aren't, or I'd be considerably more stouter than I am now.

Before there were an assortment of take-aways how many Fish and Chip shops were there in Silsden? There are two now, I assume there was once more, so possibly the number of take-aways has not altered as much as one thinks. Just the choice has changed.

Silsden sustained 3 chippy's for many a year and then one changed to a Chinese. The chippy owners all stayed for many years. Then we starteds with an influx of non chippy fast food outlets which often change ownership, which suggests there are not profitable. They close down more often than be sold as on going concerns.
In both the above examples it seems supply exceeds demand.
In the case of chippy's it meant less fish & chip shops whilst in the other type of takeaway the opposite has happened and more have opened.
In either case the fact is no more takeaways, chippies or others are required in Silsden

The one on the hill was called Hills i think, and the fifth one was at the bottom of Aire View where those new houses are now on the left. Not sure i really remember that one though
Shame the chippys close so early nowadays, it was grand walking down town at nineish with a newspaper full of chips and scraps, happy days

4 Chippies
HILL chippy ( so named because it was " top o hill "
Top Chippy ( Pauls Mum & Dad if memory serves )
Middle Chippy Still there
Bottom Chippy Again still there although now minus the sit in bit .
The Chinese Was the first non chippy take away
( Formally Silsden's Milk Bar )
Before my time next to the cobblers shop on Elliot St was the Pie & Pea's shop ( later to become the " Wooden Hut "
So it would seem chippies have gone down 50% while take aways have increased ?%
