This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

I have just been reading about Otley becoming a "no cold calling zone" and wondered whether this could work in silsden, obviously it would need funding I wonder whether there is much support for this and if it could be funded from silsden precept.Anyone got any thoughts

Sounds good, but do cold callers take as much notice of it as they do signs?
Does it apply to Catalogues as well?

I have a note on my front door saying 'No cold callers or Tradesmen.' Must admit so far it has worked.

They're trying to make a living so unless they have done something wrong why be hostile? Most take the hint and move on. Sometimes though an argument is unavoidable, in which case door shuts!
Though if someone has a sign why bother them. They obviously have reasons for not wanting to be disturbed, maybe doing so they have good reason to be hostile.

Print yourself some small leaflets and keep them handy inside near your door.

When you open the door to a cold caller and they try to hand you a leaflet, dont accept it but hand them one of yours, and shut the door before they have chance to respond.

You can write whatever message you think appropriate on your leaflets and leave them stood outside to ponder over it.

I think no cold calling zones would be a good idea, we have had two round today, one about drives and one about roofs.Neither were in a van though both were on foot.
How do we go about setting this up if enough people are interested?

There is an area of Silsden which has recnetly had one set up with help from the neighbour policing team, however, for the life of me I can't remember the exact streets it covers. Perhaps a telephone call or email to the neighbour policing team would be a good place to start to find out if your street is covered by the existing zone and if not they may be able to give you advise on how to set one up in your area.

We have one on Dradishaw Road. There is a sign on a lamp-post and we have stickers for our windows. I think it goes around Kent Ave, Cornwall Ave etc.
The local PCSO set it up.

There is a Cold Calling Control Zone covering approximately 550 houses in the area between Dradishaw Rd, Skipton Rd and Woodside Rd.
The scheme was set up by the Neighbourhood Policing Team in partnership with your ward councillors who provided the funding and the Keighley Neighbourhoods section of Bradford Council along with West Yorkshire Trading Standards.
Schemes are aimed at reducing doorstep crime and the fear of crime.
The schemes cost approximately £1.50 per household which covers the cost of printing of stickers, signs etc.
The scheme has to be supported by the residents and a consultation paper is delivered initially to ensure this is the case.
I'm more than happy to increase the areas covered if residents want them. Please email or phone the NPT with areas you would like covered and I will look at where we can get funding for them.
