Gas prices on the wholesale market are down a third in the last year but the big energy companies wont pass this on to consumers. This is because Labour have promised a 20 month price freeze if they win in May and the energy companies are scared wholesale prices might rise.

The high prices are nothing to do with the tories selling off the country's utilities then?

Gas, water, electricity, postal service, railways, buses, NHS.

Most or all of them now owned by foreign investors!!!!

Actually the reason fuel prices do not follow the current wholesale price is simple. Suppliers buy ahead on a fixed price contract for a fixed term. This means they have to pay more until the contract ends. It works the other way as well.

Most suppliers offer such contracts to customers. First time I did this fuel prices rose for two years while mine did not.

Labour offering to fix prices suggests someone had a better grip on economic realities than the so called capability experts. Fuel prices falling means Labour actually made a no cost offer.

As is conveniently forgotten it was a Labour government that effectively dealt with the incompetent banks. Everyday we see examples of businesses not being able to hack it, and the Tories are always telling us businesses know best.

I certainly have no confidence in the economic abilities of the current government. Mind you classical economics has not delivered for most people. We need a change from the current dogma.

Interesting re-writing of history there Old Miner

As I have very little interest in Politics or their leaders, let's not forget which party got us into a financial mess before the last election. No funds left in the pot after Labour lost.

If I understand it Ed Balls apologized for allowing bankers to get on with their job understandably not realizing they were not up to it.

When did bankers apologize for not being up to the job?

Bet the present lot never apologize for all their mistakes.

A quote from the article

"The banking crisis was a disaster," he said. "All around the world the banks behaved irresponsibly, but regulation wasn't tough enough. We were part of that. I'm sorry for that mistake, I deeply, deeply regret it"

What he is saying is regulation was not tough enough

Remember Gardon Brown
"He focused on the Financial Services Authority (FSA), which he established in a surprise move on his first day as chancellor in 1997. It was widely criticised during the financial crisis for failing to predict and manage the turmoil. "

I think the Tories would have done similar...but they were not in power...Labour were, they made the decisions

On that note...back to gas prices. If you wish to start a "bankers thread" feel free to start one.

Citizens Advice calls for Big Six to follow E.ON's lead

Citizens Advice has called on the Big Six energy firms to cut bills after E.ON slashed its gas prices by 3.5%.

The charity said with wholesale costs having fallen steadily for a year, the other large energy firms must also pass these savings on to households struggling to make ends meet.

Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens Advice, said: “There can be no more ifs and buts, all energy firms must now cut household bills. If E.ON can cut its gas prices so can the other firms.

"Citizens Advice wants to see energy suppliers reduce prices for all customers, not just those able to switch to get the best deals.

It's quite simple. If you object to getting energy from a foreign owned company there are plenty of UK owned smaller resellers. You might pay more but if you boycott the so called Big Six they will grow. No point in being jingoistic as it's still a free market.

I received an email from Scottish power saying my contract is due for renewal in Janyary. I did a quick calculation and found the figures didn't add up, which ever way they were calculated. I went on to uswitch.com which said I had been paying £70 per month. I have physically paid £85 per month?

I went into my Quidco account and ran a search through Uswitch.com. The cheapest, when I entered my consumption figures, turned out to be Npower. I had a contract with them several years ago and was disgusted by tgeir customer service. I selected another company which is £1 dearer over the year.

I spoke to Scottish power who could only offer a contract until March 2016 and £40 extra per month. He would not/could not explain the discrepancy over my payments???

I have saved £165 over the year, plus £30 cash back tgrough my Quidco account. A saving of £195 for the year.

It has the added advantage that it is a UK company, based in Warwick.

5% - wow! An average saving of £37 per year! but not til end of February!

Considering wholesale gas prices have fallen by nearly 30% - think they are taking the michael somewhat!

I switched to Scottish Power in January 2014 on a fixed dual fuel tariff of £149 monthly for 12 months. This month I took out another fixed dual fuel tariff until January 2016 & I was pleasantly surprised to find that my new tariff is £68 monthly.

I just thought I'd share a customer experience with you, I am with utility warehouse for my gas and electric and couldn't be happier and will be moving my broadband and phone with them soon. The person who introduced me to them showed me everything and there was no hassle of having to chase them to see when they would take over as my new energy provider. If you're not happy with your current provider I would be more than happy to give you his number so that he could have a chat with you. Definitely 10/10 for customer service.
