"I'm doing my best to help with the alleged global warming driving about in my 4x4"
Quote from another stream:

Curious to know what people really think.

My opinion is:

It is definitely getting warmer. I understand the science behind the greenhouse effect and therefore consider the current global warming to have been created by too much carbon dioxide being generated through burning carbon based fuels.

I also thing that the non carbon future is perfectly viable with nuclear energy being the base choice backed up by an assortment of other technologies. I also think that there is a good chance hydrogen will replace current liquid hydro-carbon fuels, although the storage problem needs to be resolved.

Nuclear currently means fission technology, work is being carried out to make fusion technology practical and in the wings is the possibility of exotic technologies involving ant-matter and black holes. (Do not laugh, check out the latest issue of new Scientist)

That's a very interesting post 'tolpuddle'.

What do you think of the current Government's policy on climate change?

our planet is changing all the time as it has done for millions of years. like any living thing, it adapts.
we may have caused some of the changes but we are intelligent enough to know that we can slow down the process which we are doing.
the media (in all sorts of subjects) has a lot to answer for!!
many of the things we are being asked to do as individuals make sense. ie, why keep the lights on when you are not in the room. my grandson does this continually but now he is 17 and actually NOW understands what all the fuss is about. (and of course it reduces your electricity bill.)
natural - maybe
man made - maybe
solution:- it doesn't hurt to help the planet we live in for our future generations.
if we look after it - it will look after us
does it really matter who or why? what does matter is that we care enough to do something about it

I'm with tolpuddle on this....more nuclear, but this government has delayed too long, and the lights will go out. Wind power is a bust flush, the rest is running out.
Also, I read the other day that if we are to feed the world we need MORE CO2, as it helps plants to produce more output (true)
Anyone else getting confused?

As I understand it plants take in carbon dioxide and use it as part of their growth cycle. Seems logical as we then burn wood and reasle the carbon back into the atmosphre. We also eat food and release it as well but probably best not to go there.

Part of the problem is that besides making to much CO2 we are reducing the number of plants to absorb it. Just think how much plant life is remove when a road, or an building is created over virgin terrtory. Same goes when a forest is removed and replaced by grass. The CO2 absorption area per area of land is reduced, or eliminated if built over.

It is true that one way to reduce CO2 in the air would be to have more plants, ie food. So maybe the idea is to have multi-story fields, like a mult-story car park, where the intermediate layes are light artificially of by the use of mirrors! In fact such a food production plant could be next to a nuclear power station. Electrical energy for the light and surplus heat for warmth. CO2 is removed from the air and put to useful work and CO2 electricity is produced at the same time.

I actually believe the solution is technical rather than political. Remember the internal combustion engine solved a real street pollution problem created by horses.

Tolpuddle,Ithink you will find that water vapour contributes more to temperature rise than CO2. Carbon dioxide is only a very small percentage of the so called greenhouse gases. It is a well documented fact that the Earth is going through a cooling phase though this fact is not publicised.

Very inconvenient Alan! Fact = the earth's average mean temperature hasn;t risen since '97. Fact = you certainly can't say that about Gordon Brown's so called green taxes !!!

Thank goodness for global warming! Just think how cold it would be in Silsden if it didn't exist! Personally I'm basking in 25 degrees of sunshine. Oh how I miss cold winters in Silsden. Falling on your arse on non gritted pavements, sliding out off control in the car. How I wish that someone would send us the wrong kind off snow over here. Now log fires in the Robin and a pint of Tetleys, that is missed.

Well shaggy as we watch all the news about the coldest winter in 20 years, it makes me wonder if it's just a coincidence that it started just days after the climate change conference.

Perhaps it's just God putting two fingers up at us and telling us not to be so conceited that we can change the climate! After all that's his job wink ;)
