This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Had some roof spray salesmen again today, guy got upset when told "sorry I don't buy from the door".
Bit more 'cautious' as apparently reported on here some burglaries close by.
Are these guys suppose to carry ID, they seemed legit but only went to houses with cars on drive!

Maybe they target houses with cars on the drive because there is a better chance that somebody will be at home.

If it was the company from Bingley, I think they are above board but there has been a lot of salesmen on waterside over last couple of weeks including three men saying they had too much tarmac due to a contract being cancelled, no ID no business cards or leaflets It was the same week that burglaries occurred on Jennings Close, don't know if there is a connection

@tetleydrinker most likely. The ones I find odd are the ones who only goto the bungalows, probably selling chair lifts laugh :D

@ginjo the tarmac is an old well known con.
As far as I know salesmen should have ID or at least a business card. Sometimes asking for ID when they refuse to be told "you're not interested" they are quite happy to then move on!

I understand that in some areas streets have got together and become a "no cold calling" zone. Not sure how you go about setting it up though

Those signs sometimes work, if they get noticed and if salesmen take notice.
I get slightly suspicious when they don't just move on and want to argue, "if" they were trying to get sales surely arguing with someone just because they immediately tell you they are not interested just enforces their reason(s) for not wanting to talk to sales people at the door!

Thanks Peter,
Have printed them off, duly waiting to be laminated.Although we do have a sign on door, these men on occasions ignore them. As a previous post says, they give you a hard time if they do risk ringing the door bell. Afraid they don't get much change from me!!!

Now please can we have something to deter those darned phone calls.
All suggestions will be tried.

For unwanted marketing/sales phone calls, join Telephone Preference Service www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/
This covers a lot of calls, but for some reason it does not cover calls from India, where some of the calls originate. Worth a try, and you can threaten to report callers to TPS to put them off, if they get thru the net.

We do have T.P.S. But as you say, calls originating from India do get through. Have found that they are probably changing their tactics, phone numbers are changing when you do 1471.
Originally it was an 08 number, then a 00000, now number withheld.
Noticed this week that these silent calls that are made, the company can be fined. We shall see.
Sorry Peter, going into another thread here.

this post has been edited 1 time(s)

I get maybe one every three months, tend to see how quickly I can get them to hang up.
I simply ask where they got my number from (did I give it to them?), what is the name of the company they work for (not who they are phoning on behalf of), what is the purpose of the call, what their name is (legally when asked they have to tell you) and if after all that I did not give them permission to contact me (companies you are a customer of can contact you unless you tell them otherwise) and it is a sales call I ask them why they are illegally phoning numbers registered to TPS!
Obviously companies phoning from abroad are bound by the laws of the country they are calling from!

grandson...you are lucky, we get 4/5 calls every day, despite being on TPS, the majority are from India, with a name like Adrian, David, James, Diane or other alias! They are a damned nuisance. We also get them from USA sometimes....time to change our phone number again, maybe.

I bet you are too polite, best to try and get them to black list you by wasting their time. Funnily enough the ones I "lose" it with never seem to phone back!

My hubby just puts the phone down (still on) on the kitchen worktop then carries on what he is doing and waits to see how long they talk to themselves for! Funnily enough, they never seem to call back either!!

happy :) One of the best solutions is to get yourself a phone with caller display and a built in answering machine. If I don't recognise the incoming number I refuse to answer it and let the answer machine take over. Needless to say, they never leave a message. A phone with caller display will only show a call from outside the UK as 'International' but if you have relatives abroad and you worry that they may be calling you, you also know that they will either leave a message or ring back.

A friend of ours told me of her dealings with the phone people. Asked which company and an adress for them...so that she could forward a bill to them for wasting her time. IT WORKED.

Last time I got one of these calls I said just one word "YES".

If you say YES to every question they get all exited until after about three minutes of wasting THEIR time they realise they have been had and hang up.

Just remember only say YES, nothing else at all.

I have not had another call since.
