Just driven past Deli 3 at the bottom of Bolton Rd and it reminded me that if I am going to the illuminations in tacky Blackpool I need to go soon. Incidently isnt the bottom of Bolton Road, unlike Blackpool in a conservation area because it now makes those signs for the former firework shop look tastefull |

Gazzer I don't see you attempting to fill the now two empty retail shops on kirkgate.... These are hard times for businesses and instead of criticising them you should be applauding their courage for filling them shops and having the ba##s to set up shop.....

I seem to remember that when Boneaparts ( The ex wine bar ) was first renovated Bradford planning Dept took huge exception to its Georgian windows on the grounds that they where out of character with the area ( the fact that a shop opposite had them didn't matter )also they where painted the wrong colour !!! . From Brad Mets lack of action regarding several large / bright signs in a conservation areas I can only conclude that Brad Met has 1 set of rules for some and another set for others !! . |

cripes! Give Gazzer a chance! Localman you're probably the biggest moaner on the site, you have no room to talk.
Gazzer thinks there signage is a bit gaudy from what I gather. I too think it's a bit out of keeping with the character of Silsden. I don't give a sh*t what kind of business is in the premises as long as the exterior is in keeping with the feel of Silsden and the conservation area.
Jackal I don't see you opening a business either so what are you doing for the community if your so community spirited?
Definitely a car accessory shop, I really miss the old one, I used it a lot and don't like Halfords at all.
I'd like to see something like the Savers that opened in Bingley but I'm not sure where it would go.
I wonder if an 'outdoors' type shop like you see in Skipton would make a go of it here? |

Jonno your an idealist and when it comes to a recession ideals go out if the window, businesses are being hit hard, Jonno for your info I have several business interests in the town, commercially. I walk the talk...... Unlike other people who just moan about a few signs,
I know how hard it is for business.... When you see takings fall 80% you know something is wrong with silsden town. The silsden folk as lovely as they are do not do their shopping in town, they rather drive out of town to the massive over priced super stores in keighley and bradford.
On another note I'm thinking of opening another business in town.... How does a cash generator sound? |

jackal you are a very loyal brave man I think a lot of people did not realise how bad this recession was going to be as it is only now starting to kick in on monday at the midland hotel in bradford hundreds of people turned up for the few xmas post office jobs that were on offer the job centre and the recruitment agency made a huge cock up instead of 25 an hour turning up 100 and hour turned up all day it was total chaos by dinner time all the jobs had gone but they still had hundreds of people still waiting and hundreds more that had been booked interviews on tuesday but all the jobs had gone the whole scene looked like something out of the 1930's it was very very sad to see |

Practice what you preach I seem to be misunderstood. Nowhere have I called for the shop to be closed down and welcome the opening of shops in general. Wether we needed another takeaway is debateble but that a seperate issue. Its about what the centre of Silsden looks like. I am opening a debate so people can say how they feel.If their new signs dont meet planning regs then they shouldnt be there. If they do meet planning regs then they can be there....but I still wouldnt like how they make the town centre looks. Saying they are just trying to make a living if in breach of planning, isnt an excuse or you could say the same about scrap theives. |

.... what you are saying is no coffee morning banners on church walls? no gala signs put up might as well ban the lights as well if we are going to stick to your so precious planning laws ... Aside from being a complete Straw-man argument (no-one ever said ban banners which are only temporary) it seems you think people should only keep laws which they like and break the rest if it means they can make a bob or two.
Why can't you understand that people can still make money even if their shop sign remains in keeping with the rest of the town? Do you really think people are drawn into Deli3 by the sign? Do you think all the businesses that have failed would have succeeded if they'd had "better" signs? Don't make me laugh any more, please!
I think it's you who needs to wake up and smell the burgers. |

On another note I'm thinking of opening another business in town.... How does a cash generator sound? Well, I pop into the one in Kly maybe once a week for a look-see and to be honest their prices for 2nd hand stuff are way too high for me. Dunno if other folk are as tight as me or not but I'd guess many are.
One thing that is booming are these claims management companies. PPI mis-selling is the current big thing and credit card charges and default charges on mortgages and endowment mis-selling is still a big earner for some companies. But that type of business wouldn't really benefit the main street in Silsden much.
So go on then, you've bin very coy, tell us what your business interests are then we're all very nosey (well I am anyway!) |

Jonno I don't think I wish to reveal anything on here nor will I gain any more, my intrests probably will take a beating if I reveal what they are because people will judge my businesses by my personal opinions hence sorry you will have to keep guessing......
Aside from the deli lot with their banners I wonder if you have a problem with the church banners or are we going to have one rule for us and one for them. Leave them be and by the way many businesses do fail because of a lack of advertisement..... |

Please keep this on the subject which is really about appropriate shop signage in a conservation area (not what shops we need, or how to run a shop).
PLEASE do not insult each other. Just because you write under a pseudonym is no excuse for bad manners. Thank you, Peter |

Well since you don't know me you're not really qualified to comment about what I do or don't know. But know this, I have successfully run my own business in the past. Have you?
You'll note that I haven't yet said anyone should close their shops! Far from it good luck to them all. I just don't want Silsden to descend into a free for all with all sorts of garish signs popping up everywhere.
Banners are by their nature supposed to be temporary, I only moaned about the fireworks one because it was up there long after the event. |

Penine Autoparts, now the Carpet Gallery was a thriving business. I agree that a bike shop might be a viable enterprise, with minimal competition. I think there are one or two bike shops in Skipton, with the same in Keighley. All Terrain, formerly based in Crosshills are now in Saltaire. Other competition consists of Halfords and JJB SPORTS.
If my memory serves me well, Sam (Penine Autoparts) closed due to lack of a descendant, not lack of trade or finance. |

Why did pennine auto parts not sell rather than shut down ?
I still think a cash generator style business would do well.... |
