hi a hope someone can help with the following, walking dogs on the canal i was going to turn over a canal bridge back up to skipton road but had to go right onto grand bridge up to grand house/kildwick grange, thats the bridge before barretts bridge going up priest bank, but the earlier 2 bridges before grand bridge, lane house bridge and woodside bridge are always left in an open position so no way across the canal,am i right in saying there is a footpath over these two bridges so they should be kept open, and last time i saw the woodside bridge it had a lock and chain on it to stop it being shut,i hope someone can comfirm wether these are footpaths or not.as they are on my map????

I have a vague recollection that at least one of these bridges was found unsafe a few years ago, so fastened open. Though I can't remember why I think that!

While on the subject of footpaths though I wonder if anyone else has been annoyed by the sign saying "private keep out" or similar on the public footpath next to White Crag House on Light Bank Lane. At the other end on Brunthwaite Lane the farmer took the public footpath sign down a few years ago & has locked the gate. I reported it to the footpaths officer but she didn't seem to take it too seriously.

Several bridges between Low Howden to Kildwick have been left closed for years. Whether it is land owners not wanting people on the land or maintenance, I don't know.

Since British Waterways became the Canals & Rivers Trust, conservation works don't appear to be carried out as frequently. As a charitable body, funding is probably not available. I have emailed both the North East and North West Offices, that manage the canal and part of the river Aire regarding volunteering sessions in the area. There are planned schemes set up for Wigan, Liverpool, Preston etc, but nothing for this area. Back in January, the town council at Barnoldswick where looking at setting a heritage and conservation group up to restore and maintain the locks - Friends of Greenberfield Locks (Craven Herald).

Many of the access routes to the canal through farmland leave a lot to be desired. Under the rural payments scheme, land owners are paid to maintain access routes. It is also a point of law under the CROW and PROW Acts, that they are made accessible.

Just a word of cation re' White Crag House on Light Bank Lane foot path.Don't walk it alone you will be challenged/ threatened, normally paths and highways would be on it like a shot, but they wont in this case,i think it's the cost of a court case.
