Uncertain future for Silsden Post Office as current postmaster says he intends to resign

Councillors fear the future of Silsden's only post office is under threat.

The postmaster of the Kirkgate facility, Andrew Cathey, said he intends to hand in his notice in about a month's time.

Mr Cathey, 62, who has been postmaster for 25 years, said he would have liked to have continued until he was 65, but added he was effectively being "forced out".

I cannot see anywhere in the article that says the post office will be closing, it is going to be modernised which is a good thing isn't it? The hours are a bit outdated, for a business to succeed nowadays it needs to be open longer hours, I have seen a lot of people trying to use the post office at lunch time but it closes for an hour also closes at 5-30pm. a lot of businesses close after this time so might need the post office later.
I use the post office whenever I can and I have also had good service from Andrew and his staff it will be a shame if he decides to go.
On another point, I wish the town councillors and ward councillors would stop banging on about the amount of houses we are going to get, I am not aware that the development plan has been produced yet let alone approved, the more they go on about it the more it becomes a fait a compli ( bet I spelt that wrong)what steps have they taken to ensure it does not happen

It will be a sad day if this happens, I use the PO about 2 or 3 times every week, and have always been very happy with the service. They help you with difficult choices, are always pleasant, service is always good. I know they always do their best, and they will be missed.
I hope that the replacement service comes up to the same standards, but that remains to be seen.

CONCERNS have been raised in Sutton after the village post office closed just three weeks after moving to a new location.
The long-time facility at 44 Main Street closed on September 9 and a new post office opened the next day 30 metres down the road at the newly-refurbished Costcutter, at 30-32 Main Street.
However, about three weeks later, the post office counter in Costcutter closed even though the corner shop remained open.
Sutton parish councillor, Ken Hart, said: "It's left the village without a post office.
"If they're going to close it permanently, they need to find another alternative.
"We can't do without one as there are a lot of elderly people in this village, and this has made it a bit awkward, especially for them. Elderly people rely on the post office for their pensions and other things."
A Post Office spokesman said: “We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Sutton-in-Craven Post Office. The branch has been closed since October 2 due to operational reasons.
"We are working hard to restore services to the area as soon as possible. In the meantime, customers can access post office services at any branch, with Cross Hills Post Office being the closest alternative.”
The spokesman added it was a temporary closure and there would be no movement of the branch to another premises.
But Jazz Singh, owner of the Costcutter, said: "It's not paying for us to have it.
"Basically, cutbacks means they're pushing post offices through stores, and the amount people are getting paid in post offices is half of what postmasters used to make.
"The new local format for post offices is set up to be open for longer hours, but it doesn't warrant it for what they're giving you because you'll end up paying out of pocket. You have to work longer hours for less money. If you're running a shop, you can't do things like that."
But he added discussions are ongoing with the Post Office about its future at the Costcutter store.
