This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

At the Silsden Park Day this morning the guys from the Canal and River trust told me funding was now in place to join Silsden tow path with the one at Farnhill.

Their hope is to make it as wide as possible to accommodate the growing amount of cyclists and walkers.

All they need to do now is sort out the different people who do the different jobs to put the project together.

The Regional Director of CRT is unaware of any secured funding for the Silsden to Kildwick section of the tow path. We have to presume therefore that the CRT representative was referring to the Kildwick to Gargrave section.

Will continue to keep up the pressure on all the various agencies whenever possible.

The guy in the park worked for the canal and river trust and said it was from Silsden canal bridge to the Farnhill road bridge.

I have emailed again and had the following response.

"I have checked with the project team and the plan is to complete 11.7km of towpath improvements which comprise: 8.2km between Anchor Bridge (Gargrave) to Gawflat Swing Bridge (Skipton) and 3.5km between Bradley Swing Bridge (Bradley) and Warehouse Swing Bridge (Kildwick).

We had a fundraiser at the Silsden Park Day and I imagine that either they misquoted the plans or were misheard – I apologise for any confusion caused.

The Canal & River Trust are the charity who own most of the towpaths in the country and we generally work with local authority funding to improve them as the cost of such work would far exceed our own resources to such work alone."

This is from the regional director of the CRT. Disappointing to think that Silsden has had the Tour De France, and two separate stages of the Tour de Yorkshire and we still don't have a modern corridor for cyclists and walkers that is fit for purpose. Where has all the money gone that these events supposedly brought to the region?

A few weeks ago I went to Majorca on holiday and their cycle network facilities put ours to shame. Come on WYCA - if you're serious about policies that encourage people to get more active then this last section linking two separate parts of the National Cycle Network is a no brainer.
