Have you heard of Community First Responders? Maybe not! But this almost secret group of life savers are out there in our communities to help make that vital difference when we most need help!

So who are these people and what do they do? In recent times the N.H.S. and the Ambulance Service has been under severe pressure coping with high demand and a huge increase in calls during recent times. At times demand can outstrip available resources so responding to emergency calls within target times can be demanding.

To help reach people with life threatening problems such as Stroke, Cardiac Arrest and Breathing difficulties the Ambulance Service now make use of selectively trained local community volunteers to respond to the emergency before the arrival of an Ambulance.
This small but dedicated band of people selflessly give their own free time and enthusiasm to help their local communities and largely go unnoticed.

As well as volunteering to respond at short notice to active emergencies they also take time to share their knowledge to others in the community who they encourage to learn basic life saving skills.

One of these skills is C.P.R. ( Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation ) or ‘Heart Massage’ to anyone suffering a Cardiac Arrest. An ‘arrest’ is time critical and anyone who can intervene as soon as possible will give the victim a precious chance of survival.

C.P.R. training is simple for anyone to learn; so the Silsden First Responders wanting to spread their message approached the Town Council for a grant to buy two C.P.R. manikins to use for ‘hands on’ demonstrations in the community! To their amazement the Town Council happily contributed enough money for three manikins so the Silsden First Responders are now happy to offer anyone interested some additional life saving training.

The manikins were handed over to Silsden Responder Lawrence Walton by Mayor Chris Atkins. Town Counsellor Michael O’Dwyer and Town and Ward Counsellor Adrian Naylor took the opportunity for lessons in C.P.R. from Responders Sara Smith and Ray Bolton.
