Mr Knowles, who was in his early 80s, lived at Embsay and had been born and brought up in Silsden.

Tributes to him posted on the Silsden.net community website described him as "one of life's true gentlemen" and a "very genuine man".

His funeral service took place yesterday at St James's Church in Silsden.

To Rene Knowles , Michael & Jane and all friends of the Late Dennis Knowles :
Back in 1969 I bought my first house from Dennis in Keighley as the seller of the house was moving to Silsden and then in 1990 due to a situation I got a rented flat in Silsden and I used to go around to the Knowles , Knowles and Knowles estate agents offices to pay the monthly rent and end up chatting to all even having a coffee with them . Later I bought a house in Daisy Hill before moving back to Scotland in 1999 .

Dennis Knowles was at first my landlord of the rented flat and as a result of that my wife, Diane and I became very good friends of Dennis and Rene , Michael and Jane . Over the years sincce moving away from Silsden we have kept closely in contact with Dennis who like me was interested in historical matters in the UK including our family Regiments such as the Duke of Wellington Regiment etc ..

A very great loss to Yorkshire and especially Silsden but everyone like us have the happy memories during the many years of friendship .

Sorry we were not able to get to the funeral as we live in the North East of Scotland ...

This message is from Lorraine Parsons (ne Knowles)

Thank you all for the lovely tributes to my dad.
Although we didn't always see eye to eye on family matters, I loved him and will miss him very much as he has always played a big part in trying to guide me down the right path in life, but was not always successful as I am very strong willed and stubborn, but he did his best

I have many happy memories to thank him for such as, the times I helped him as a child with his first business which was a paint shop in briggate selling the cheapest paint in Silsden, and he also made his own washing up liquid which as a family we sold throughout lancashires mills and houses.
We also had a market stall in todmorden market where we also sold decorating accessories, He didn't make much money in those days but he made a lot of friends.

Towards the back end of this business my dad met a man called Harold Crane, a well known estate agent in Silsden who saw great potential in him and invited him to join the business as a sales rep, and later on when Mr Crane retired dad decided to set up his own estate agency in what was the hill fish&chip shop, after which he moved to the old Penny Bank in Silsden and later moved accross the road to its present position in what was at that time the Y.E.B. shop.
As the business grew my mum Irene, brother michael, and sister Jane joined him in the running of it and are still doing so although they will be finding it a bit more challenging without dads input.

Mum & dad first met at a bus stop in silsden when he was on leave from the army, where she was waiting with a friend called Connie Thompson who was a bridesmaid at their wedding, they were married for nearly sixty years.

I would like to end this little bit of family history with a brief mention of my other sister Barbara, who sadly passed away in 1981, she was an S.R.N. based at Airedale General Hospital.
Dads final resting place will be along side her under the blossom tree at the entrance to kildwick church.

Thanks for your kind offer but as far as I know he didn't publish any poetry, allthough he was an avid reader and often waxed lyricle.
Regards L.
