IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : I am baffled as to what to do |
|
| awilkin29@gmail.com |
Hi. I own the little crystal and gift shop on Aire View. I have very little footfall being off the main street. I am only by word of mouth. I keep hearing from people who live in Silsden who stumble across the shop, that they did not know the shop was there even though I have been open since last October. I advertise 4 times a year in the Airedale magazine that comes through the door each month. Here on Silsden net, the local cafes, the post office, sponsership of the local football team, Bingley rural magazine and local facebook groups. What can I do to let the vilage know they have their very own gift shop in the village. All ideas welcome. Ally |

this post has been edited 2 time(s) Whom is your potential customer base? I certainly am not going to be a regular buyer from any specialist shop. In pure business terms Silsden has always struck me as a good position for an mail order (now internet) business with maybe a shop for selling off odds and ends at cut prices to locals. Use the internet and the whole world is your market. Even my limited efforts of selling odds and ends on eBay has certainly helped the local Post Office overseas mail income. One also learns some interesting practical facts. Mail times to the outback of Australia is about the same as UK second class!! |

A mail drop sounds a good idea, and don't forget to include Addingham and Steeton as people may travel to Silsden or pop in when passing through Silsden if they are interested in your products and services |

How about small scale sponsorship? Pay a small amount of money to the Golf Club, Silsden AfC, Cricket club etc for a poster/banner in the club houses. People come from all over to these venues. Possibly offer a discount scheme on presentation of a voucher? |

Thank you for your time and comments. I will see about doing a leaflet drop. I already have website and sell online with very little success I am afraid. I am not a specialist shop due to the very wide range of things I sell in addition to the crystals. I am sure have something for everyone ref gifts all year round. I will just have to play the long game ref word of mouth. |

I already sponser the Silsen football team with a voucher system. Incidentally I also offer gift vouchers to be exchanged for stock or therapy treatments. |

Ally, I think Old Miner has the answer - you should start an Ebay Shop. |

Reading your later post, it seems your shop has more to offer than just crystals. To be honest, I would not use such as shop, but I would use a gift shop and this is perhaps where you should strengthen your marketing. Silsden does not really have a decent gift and card shop (that I am aware of) so perhaps you could push that side of the business. |

I would also advise you to get in touch with someone who deals with Silsden's Christmas Market and see what involvement you could have with that?? |

Think about where else in Silsden your potential customers are likely to go, and see about putting up advertisements there. For example, are your customers mainly female? If so, approach the local ladies hairdressers, perhaps the florist, the gym, for example. Are there any regular meeting locations where you could put up a poster, like the town hall? Don't forget to make your ad really eyecatching for the target audience! |

Hi Ally Sorry to hear you're having problems letting people know about your shop. I've called in a few times & think it's great & the workshops etc are an added attraction. How about setting up on Facebook? You could let us know you'd done that & then those of us on Facebook could like your business and share your postings? I do hope you're successful in your venture ![]() With best wishes Carrie |

Maybe there just isnt a demand for what your selling and you need to alter the nature of your business? |

set up a profile of your business on Facebook & Twitter. It's free, quick and will help you reach out to potential customers. Social Media is the future of marketing, get involved or you'll miss the boat |

Have you thought about maybe doing at home parties where you can take samples of stock and have order parties. I haven't been in your shop but I love the look of it on your Facebook page and shall be dropping in soon. Not to be stereotypcial or anything but your shop looks to have a very Halloween feel, as Halloween is coming up why not stay open late that night, decorate the shop and hand out treats to the kids? If you need a volunteer to help with it I'm free |
