We are now into the second day of the nanny state telling adult tax payers what to do, what do the users of this site think of the way the smoking ban has gone ?
Will the posters please let us now if they are smokers or non smokers in the replies!
TIA |

Great day for non smokers to have their rights!
Looking forward to the day it's banned in all public places
Non smoker, except the odd cigar in private |

banning smoking in open areas i.e. the whole grounds of airedale hospital or for that matter the whole site of the car dealership i work in. isn't that going a bit too far? i need a cig as much as a non-smoker needs a pee, but you can bet there would be an outcry if there were no toilets.i know we're naughty for smoking but i started in the sixties when it wasn't even frowned upon.i'll be getting fined for letting my dogs poop on farnhill more next! (BET THAT GETS A FEW RESPONSES!) |

I'm sure there is a difference between smoking and peeing 'bobber'. However, I do agree with you on the subject of places like the hospital.

Perhaps if you peed over everybody else's shoes "bobber" it would be banned! |

not that it really bothered me too much before but i think its better i agree with the idea why should a non smoker be breathing harmfull chemicals in a pub because some stranger wants a cig (non smoker) |

Alan,
I think having the odd cigar in private would qualify you as a smoker (unless you eat it rather than smoke it)

I find some of the exemptions interesting !
Did you know taht the following can all have designated indoor smoking rooms:-
Care Homes Hospices Prisons - you will have the choice of a smoking or no smoking cell, the minibar and adult channels will of course be extra Certain hotel bedrooms On stage - If smoking is an integral part of the performance ! (no smoking during rehearsals) Speciallist tobaconist shops - you are allowed to sample cigars or pipe tobacco (not ciggies)on the premises (where is the nearest try before you buy shop) Research facilities - does this include beagles ? Mental health facilities (until 2008)
So as i see it you can still smoke if you are in care, dying, a criminal, a thespian, a hotel guest, a nutter, a specialist tobacconist, or you are a research guinea pig.
But you can't have a smoke and a pint when chatting to your mates !
At least we don't live in a nanny state
And my final rant of the day, how much will it cost to police the smoking ban ?
p.s. If you had'nt guessed I am a smoker |

Do I get the impression that you're not happy about this "tetlydrinker"?
Don't start me on about prisons, having worked in them refurbishing them! My son has to get a loan for his university fees and lodgings. What do prisoners get? Free board, a telly in the cell, and any course they want to do for their education - absolute rubbish! AND NOW choice of a smoking cell!!!!! |

All through history socities have not remained static. If we had no one would have left Africa.
One thing that was quickly learnt was that to live a a group rules were needed. (note: hippy communes often learn this simple fact the hard way). Obviously the rules have to be agreed to by the majority otherwise they cannot work. Different socities have differing priorities, usually based on historical necessities. (muslim head scarves are to keep the sand out and hide ones face from raiders so they do not go straight for the women of child bearing age - simple, children and old grannies do not bother) Our society currently has a thing about helath and welfare. Hence the smoking ban and half the population wearing yellow jackets so the other half can see them. As this ban seem to be being observed one must assume that the general concensus by the majority is that it is a good thing. Unlike speeding and driving while using a mobile phone. |

Mental health facilities (until 2008)
I work a Mental Health facilities and we have been smoke free since January 1st. The turst board told us that we were not exempt from the smoking ban. As a result all of our patients have to go out in the garden to smoke. Most of them need escorting.
I am a current non-smoker, I smoked up until about 4 years ago. I have no problem with other people smoking I am just not keen on it when i am trying to eat. And lets face running the gauntlet through the smokers on the outside of a building is not all that much fun either. |

Nice one Alan, I think a good prize would be a "POFOR" in Wedgewood of course. Do you think Silsden Town Council could afford to buy one? |

You hit the nail on the head there....
Since I started (many moons ago) drinking in pubs I have breathed the fumes spat out by the smokers. Also had my clothes hair ect stinking of smoke.
The smokers didn't (still don't) care about this, it is simply the residue of their pleasure. Well you can imagine the outcry if I stood on a table in the pub and started distributing the residue of my pleasure (peeing) all over the clothes, hair etc of the smokers.
I would have been arrested. Well now we are on equal terms, as the smoker will now be arrested....
Brilliant this government has managed to get a bit of backbone...

What about the rights of non-smokers? I don't want to breath in the stink of your cigs. Then there's the health risks of second hand smoke ( if you choose to smoke you accept the risks to yourself). |

Can't remember which comedian said it but they were once in a restaurant with someone on the next table smoking, he went over to the table and took a drink form the smoker's pint, the smoker obviously not very happy asked what he comedian thought he was doing, to which the comedian replied "i'm having your smoke, i might as well have your drink as well". something i always wished i'd had the nerve to do, looks like i'll never get my chance now. |

i am a non smoking but infact i am finding the ban on smoking in pubs worse then when you could smoke inside as now people crowd outside the pub doors blowing smoking into the faces of passing folk. at least when the smoke was inside the extracter fans help take it up and away. |

I went away for the weekend and stopped in a hotel, absolutely wonderful no smoking in the restaurant or the bar.
At long last non-smokers have got THEIR rights back! |
