Summary of Bradford Council Meeting
Full Council Meeting 20/2/2014 Summary
The Council has made cuts of £100 million over the last three years Required to make £115 million more over the next three years (25% of present budget) Cuts of £37 million this year and £52 million the year after. Job losses 656 over the next two years (on top of 1,500 previously cut)
Examples of Service Cuts
Youth Service £1.450 m reduction in sites and youth worker numbers (36% cut) Day Care £287,000 withdrawal of service Residential Homes £285,000 closure of two sites Voluntary Sector £300,000 cut in infrastructure support funding (25% cut) Libraries £330,000 reduction in number of libraries and staff Community Wardens £200,000 reduction in numbers Homelessness Care £50,000 reduction in bed and breakfast funding
Issues raised
Some issues stand out and need further consideration: Use of reserves to help cushion the additional cuts. Use of public health funding, now allocated to local governments, as a substitute for council funding cuts, eg, adult health care. Process of cuts followed by withdrawal from service, eg libarary service to be replaced by some sort of 'community provision'. All point to a clear pattern of continued steep cuts that leave much smaller services and then these services to be taken out of council provision by the end of 2015-16. |

People do not like paying taxes.
They vote in a government that says it will reduce taxes.
We have a government that is reducing taxes.
Less tax income means less government money to spend.
Poor and sick can only be screwed down so far.
Local government means national government can pass the blame down the line.
You are getting what you voted for.

We appear to be getting - a reducing deficit , an improving economy , reducing unemployment and a smaller state which will "eventually" lead to lower tax!!! |

What do the words 'a reducing deficit' mean to people like me? No seriously what do they mean? I understand the words 'Day Care £287,000 withdrawal of service' I can see that. But I think that to say to anybody, 'you have lost your job, but wait, we are giving you a reducing deficit' requires a serious examination of what these words mean. I think the words might as well mean 'smokescreen'. |
