just heard how much fares are going up on Jacksons bus from 1st march and feeling very annoyed!! the 70p fare is going up to £1 how can that be justified when inflation is almost zero? do they want people to use the bus or not, don't know who sets the fares but this is taking the mick |

I think that the majority of Jackson's customers are, like myself, over 60 and use the now national free bus pass.
The pre-9:30 buses are probably used by regular commuters who probably have metro cards.

the point I am making is that there is no excuse to increase fares by nearly 50 per cent. It makes me very angry when the buses are full of people who are travelling for nothing just because they can.The majority of pensioners I have spoken to think the free fares for over 60's is a mistake and is costing the bus companies a lot of money because the government subsidies do not cover the cost. There are a lot of wealthy people who are still working at age 60, on good wages or who have taken early retirement on a damned good pension, yet they still get free travel and a winter fuel allowance. This means the rest of us who are not very well off end up getting ripped off!! sorry I got carried away then!! if the fares need to go up, maybe a 5 per cent increase would be more realistic. |

Despite being a fully fledged car driver I have always believed that public transport (local buses that is) should be totally free to all, and that we should have an adequate bus service for the needs of the community!
In the days before Thatcher deregulated buses a lump of the finance came from local authorities and government, and quite rightly so. It still does to an extent, but greatly reduced. Sadly that evil woman Thatcher sowed the seeds of many of our many problems today! |

Ginjo....if they are still working after 60 they are paying tax and national insurance, so are helping to pay for it anyway! Can't see the problem in elderly people getting out for a run on the bus, better than staying at home running up costly energy bills. |

If you make it to sixty after working all your life you are entitled to summat!
It's the scroungers that never work 'cos they are too lazy that should pay! |

Well said Alan! The other day I was talking to a couple and the subject of class can up, they said in a rather annoyed tone, "We are not working class! We are on benefits." maybe that sums it all up. If all local buses were free to use at the point of service, then just like Shefield in the pre Thatcher days there would be hardly any cars on the roads. Train fares would also be a lot cheaper if most of the subsidy the operators get didn't got out into the pockets of the shareholders. |

Even if buses were 'free' many people would still use their cars. Some surveys suggest that fuel at £2 a litre would not drag many people from their cars. £5 a litire and they start thinking about it. I actually think that putting local public transport on the rates is a good idea. To make the service effective all on road vehicle parking would have to cease, at least on bus routes. It is not the roads that slow buses down, it is the vehicles parked at the side of the road. Got my hobby horse in. |

White Male over 60
As for the parking.
Well, motoring and cars seems to be invested with a sacredness once reserved for deities. Future students of the human race will no doubt look back on the car era of today and consider the relationship with the car as a religion. To speak out against the car tends to invoke the type of response once served on heretics in the middle ages. Fortunately without the burning at the stake bit, although no doubt some would be happy to go down that route to protect the car.
Also I love playing devil's advocate and being seen as 'anti car' really winds people up.
I do have a car, and I practise what I preach in that unless absolutely necessary, I do not park at the side of the road. I am happy to pay for a car park, or park away from where I want to be and walk. |

So answer my question then 'wahiba' why don't you start a car parking topic if that's the thing you like to wind people up with?
Shall I start one off for you? |

Start a car parking topic by all means.
My little hobby horse is not actually about car parking but about vehicles obstructing the highway. |
