it seems they put a false front on the machine which took the details of any cards used I know of other people who have been robbed in this way talking to one lad yesterday who had just over a £1000 taken from his account and one of his mates has also had his account scammed. The bank is aware of the scam so every one should in time get there money back.happy :)

I got done £300 a couple of months ago.
I could not prove it, but I am sure it was the Silsden ATM at Barclays where my card was skimmed. I got the money back in ten days as I could prove I was not in London where the dodgy transaction took place.

Always check the machines for anything that looks dodgy, cover your fingers when you key in your pin numbers, if you go to one hole in the wall and it is out of order be extra careful at the next nearest one, sometimes they disable one to make more people use the one they are scamming.

Spookily, I had my debit card cloned by some very nice person in the Ukraine last week too. Fair play to Lloyds for picking up a dodgy cashpoint transaction and getting a new card out to me within three days. I was lucky.

I had my card number cloned through one of the major internet shopping retailers!

The buggers spent over £4k on mine, but Barclaycard found it before I even knew! They sorted it very efficiently.

Think the message is your card ain't safe anywhere!

Firstly, sorry to hear about all those folks who have had trouble with the local banks, however I was just interested to know how the scam reveals itself. Obviously some of the amounts mentioned would be spotted via an account balance check, however for someone like me who has financial expertise of a lump hammer, I never know the state of my account exactly(however I would know if I had £1000 taken and would also like to know how it got there!!!) and would only recognise any discrepency via a statement check. How are the transactions shown on a statement, I presume it is in the form of a transaction to someone that you have had no dealings with, or is it just that the money disappears from the account. It appears to have been the Barclays ATM only according to the posts, however I am just curious as the Nat West took my card for no apparent reason last nightangry.

Although mine is a Lloyds account the card could have been cloned in the Barclays ATM.

I received an automated 0845 telephone call from Lloyds security which asked me to confirm several transactions. When I didn't confirm them I was transferred to a 'real' person to block the card.

@ Greengrass, I work in a bank in the complaints team and I know for a fact they will give you all of your money back if you take them to the Ombudsman. Yes, it's a pain they won't do it otherwise but it's got to be worth £200 to spend a few minutes at www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/

We wouldn't think twice about giving you all your money back, especially if you go to FOS 'cause it costs us £450 for every complaint that goes to them, so it's just not worth it to let it get that far. I'd have another word with your bank if I were you and threaten to go to FOS.

I think this thread shows the value of this forum, where a local issue could affect a number of people and it comes out positive, with hopefully "greengrass" getting his cash back, and the rest of us a bit wiser about what is going on, and maybe being more vigilant in future....great!

Does any know how long the fake ATM front was on there for? Should it have been spotted by the branch staff? Our branch staff have to check the outside ATMs each morning so they would discover any dodgy equipment at 9am on the next working day at the latest.

That's why ATMs in remote places not attached to a bank are the highest risk for this type of problem. Also if you do see some 'funny' looking equipment, don't try to remove it, inform the bank and they'll call the police. The fraudsters may be watching and would not take kindly to you removing their expensive fake ATM front.

As I understand it they will certainly be watching you. So dont risk alerting them by trying to remove the equipment, or they may approach you to get it back !!

The equipment includes a tiny hidden camera and transmitter which can 'see' the number keypad from above, the criminals will be sat somewhere within signal range of this watching you on a laptop computer, and as you type in your pin number they will simply make a note of it.

There is another part of the device which fits around the card slot, and this electronically reads the magnetic strip as you card passes through into the real slot behind it.

The criminals then use a very easily obtained card writer to make a clone of your card using a blank store reward card or something similar with the magnetic strip on it.

Thats it, they have 'Your' card and 'Your' pin number and set of on a spending spree until someone notices, by then its usually too late.

I was extremely lucky, I got a call from Barclays asking if I had spent £300 in London a few hours earlier (which I had not), luckily for me I had just used my card in Skipton that same day, so it was impossible for me to be in London as well and they paid me back in full within ten days.

I now always look up into the roof area of the hole in the wall for anything stuck on that might be a camera. and ""ALWAYS"" cover up the keypad with my other hand ""EVERY TIME"" I use a card reader either in a shop or at the bank.

Better still go to a supermarket and buy something cheap with your card, then ask for cash back at the till.

An article of interest...........

Cash machine attacks soar
3:14pm Monday 20th April 2009

Comments (1) Have your say »

Attacks on cash machines in West Yorkshire have soared by a third, official figures revealed yesterday.

There were 19 incidents in 2008, up from 14 the year before. The increase is almost double the 17 per cent rise in the UK, to 635 last year.

LINK, the UK’s cash machine network, has now teamed up with the Crimestoppers charity to offer rewards of up to £25,000 for information, which can be given anonymously, relating to cash machine crime, whether it be physical attacks on machines, or card skimming. People are urged to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

LINK spokesman Graham Mott said: “Even something that may seem insignificant could be part of a bigger picture and prove invaluable.”

Detective Chief Inspector John Folan, head of a specialist police unit tackling cheque and plastic crime, said cash machine fraud was a priority.

He said: “Any relevant information passed to Crimestoppers will be used to help track down and arrest those responsible.”

It's always made me wonder why the banks couldn' put CCTV on their cash points.

Think of the hassle it could save and problems it could solve!

quite a lot of ATMs do have banks' CCTV directed at them but obviously not so close up that they could read the PIN as that would be a security risk if anyone got hold of the recordings.

Do they really? Why can't they identify people then? Think there's a bit of leg pulling going on!
