This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

We appear to have to pay the Environmental Agency for the privilege of cleaning up The Beck ourselves..... sad :(

Allotments: there are not enough, find out what STC are doing about it on Thursday (1 July)

quote
The clerk is in receipt of a draft report from the scrutiny of the allotments services. It is oblivious that area wide demand at the moment out strips supply for allotment gardens. Some of the recommendations include the idea of ‘meanwhile leases’ and ‘medium terms leases’ both of which would only offer temporary sites from 12 months to max 10 years.

Apart from the clerk's lack of a spell checker (joking) I wonder who would really be interested in an allotment that potentially they could just about get up and running nicely (12 months) and then have to give it up again?

I was talking to a lady waiting for an allotment who was about 60th on the waiting list. She just wanted to be able to grow things but at the rate allotments became available she doubted if one would ever become available. Something needs to be done to improve the situation. sad :(

happy :) Perhaps there are large gardens owners can't manage, or would like a little help to maintain?

happy :) Perhaps some allotments could be subdivided?

happy :) Do you know of any suitable council land STC could use for allotments?

there must be loads of people with large enough gardens who would give some of their land for a share of the crops. hugh fearnley-whittingstall set up a land share system - www.landshare.net/

there's plenty of council owned land around town that could be converted too - the memorial gardens, the flower beds at wesley place car park, bradley road green, the top of the playing fields...

And what happens when all the allotment wannabies get fed up with digging in the rain, howing in the frost?
Wait a few years and I reckon there will be plenty spare to go around.
By the way, lettuce and Strawberries grow OK in a back yard.

We did the "grow veg in your back garden thing" ten years or more ago. It was good and we had some good crops but our kids had no-where to play outside. So we turfed it and have never looked back, it's a great space to relax and play in. So if we were to grow our own again we'd want a small plot somewhere that wasn't our back garden. Maybe just half an allotment.
