From the STC meeting last Thursday.

It was reported that Bradford will be looking to sell the Youth Centre and the MUGA and the green space behind the Muga for building to pay for the new school. sad :(

This needs stopping, before Bradford strops another asset from Silsden. This is the playing field for Hothfield Street school and a valuable asset to the local community.

Bradford have never done anything for Silsden without first taking something else away.
Where are the kids who live west of the A6034 (Kirkgate) supposed to play in safety? They can't get tot he park without crossing the main road.
When the new school is built, Bradford will be making a mint out of the land now used by the two present schools, isn't that enough?

Don't think it is big enough.

Makes more sense to utilise the land at old Weavestyle and have the sports club fields to use for sporting activities

Only if parents are banned from driving kids to school..Keighley Road is a peak time nightmare already...unless of course Bradford Council came up with some forward planning and had a by pass open in time for the new school

We all know that would make sense but the land is not owned by Bradford and I think the proposed site at the top of Daisy Hill (below Drabble Farm) is just about a "done deal". More gridlock for Silsden but what do Bradford care?

From the Keighley News

A SILSDEN teenager has called on Bradford Council to rethink what she says are plans to halt provision of youth services at Elliott Street in Silsden.

Robyn Burden said she and her friends were "devastated" to learn the centre would no longer be at its current home from April onwards.

Wyke school in Bradford was replaced by a new school in 2012 and since then Bradford Council have sat on the land.Plans are now drawn up for a £2.4m multi use "community sports village" on the site. Contrast that with Silsden where the plan is to sell off the current multi use sports area, land and youth club putting the money into the education budget.

I could be wrong, but I thought the MUGA was built with money from outside Silsden/Bradford, and that there was some ruling about how it was to be used by the community?
Perhaps Mrs Leach the then head of Hothfield School who took the lead on this project can contact the Town Clerk with some useful information?

SCHOOL SPEARHEADS PLAN FOR NEW MULTI-USE GAMES AREA 21/11/2003

Craven Herald (online) 14 November 2003

A WINDFALL of £73,000 has been earmarked for Silsden to create a state-of-the-art multi-use games area.

The money from Bradford Council was allocated following a submission by Hothfield Primary School for a purpose-built sports arena to provide much-needed facilities.

Teacher Ruth Leach told members at a recent town council meeting that the money had been promised and plans drawn, but a potential problem with drainage had meant the sports area could not be built at the school.

"The powers that be at Bradford have decided we have a drainage problem and that the facility would cost nearer £140,000, but they will not make up the shortfall," she explained.

"Rather than give the money back, we think another option would be to have the multi-use games area on the site of the school playing fields next to the youth centre.

"It would remain a school facility, but could also be made available to the wider community of Silsden.
Mrs Leach added that the site would be floodlit to accommodate a whole range of sporting activities, parking would be better at this site than at the school and it would be near the youth centre.

"The more we look at it, the more it points to having it here," she said.

"We also have contact with lots of agencies such as Keighley Cougars, Bradford City and Yorkshire Cricket Club. We are working very closely with all of them."

Headteacher Bill Bairstow said that there would be financial implications over the coming years, but this could be overcome by admission charges, lettings and tuition fees.

Running costs are estimated to be in the region of £4,000 a year.

"The school will be happy to put in a little bit towards that, but there is a budget plan and there will not be a burden on individuals," he said.

The couple were at the meeting to ask the council if it would support the proposals by putting together a small steering group to move the plans forward and create a community partnership.

The question of vandalism was raised by Coun Keith Savage who said it was a terrific idea, but pointed out there was a lot of damage done at the youth centre and his only reservation was it could spread to the new facility.

Mrs Leach said the design of the fencing around the facility was meant to be "vandal proof".

PC Craig Stothers added that a facility like this could inevitably be self-policing.

"It will promote better use of the youth centre by attracting more people and will be self-policing because of the higher numbers," he said.

Chairman Alan Edwards said he was very much in favour of the plans and members of the committee voted to give it their support.

A meeting is to be arranged at the school to discuss the proposals further and will be attended by the police and council members. It is hoped the occasion will be used to formulate the new group.

People who want to keep Silsden's youth provision at its current base in Elliott Street have met to discuss the best way forward.

They discussed the uncertain future of the Bradford Council-owned youth centre at a meeting of Silsden Youth Council last Tuesday.

The district council has confirmed the building has been identified for 'alternative estate management', but insists youth services will remain on offer at locations within the Silsden area.

It looks like more smoke and mirrors coming from Bradford, why can't they just say what they mean? Then local people will have a chance of doing something to stop Bradford from selling this off to the highest bidder.

Silsden residents may take on responsibility for running threatened youth centre

An informal group of residents has come together to look at taking over the building after Bradford Council pulls out at the end of this month.

Cllr Naylor said those present at a public meeting last week included people running martial arts group and activities for children and toddlers.

He said: “The idea is to set up a special interest group with a constitution so they can go to the council with a view to putting in an expression of interest.”

Silsden residents to take over youth centre and children’s centre

A group of Silsden residents this week expected to sign a deal with Bradford Council to take over the town’s threatened youth centre.

The short-term tenancy agreement, to run the building in Elliott Street, will also cover the adjacent children’s centre.

The agreement will mean existing activities, including a youth club, playgroups and child health sessions, can continue for at least the next few months. This will give the residents time to draw up a detailed business plan showing how they would manage and maintain the building in the long-term.
