Can anybody do anything about the rats in the beck, especially the bit where the children go down to feed the ducks, I was in Bilaluci at lunch time today and saw a rat running where the children play, is there anything that can be done. Ther are a lot of diseases that people can pick up from rats.

Concerned adult.

rats are everywhere, there is little you can do, they have always been there. The reason you can see them at the moment is that the water levels are high and their normal hidden haunts are flooded. Ironically, due to the wet summer and autumn, there are probably less rats around than usual. What can be done? Stop your kids playing in the beck (slow stagnant water is worse than fast flowing) or educate them to wash hands after playing in it.

Unfortunately, the duck feeding will encourage the rats to search there, an easy meal for them. Children and adults should always wash hands after contact with standing water, especially the canal. Thrown down take away cartons add to the problem, no real answer to this only encourage folk to be tidy. The beck shouldn't be a dumping ground for litter.

I think you will find that the 'rats' are water voles; often called water rats but not the same as the brown rate. Ratty in Wind of the Willows was actually a water vole. That they are in the beck suggests it is reasonably clean.

The one I saw was a Water Rat/Vole. They are distinctively different.

Brown rats do not need to be in the beck - there is enough rubbish on dry land.

They most definitely are not water voles. Besides being very scarce nowadays they are also far too shy a creature to live anywhere near the Duckpond. Definitely rats.

100% rats, dont feed the ducks/pigeons then wont have rats about, simple, they only eating the bread leftovers that the ducks have left, far too many people feeding em,even feed em right up onto the slope and onto the road, people then walk past then the ducks waddle onto the road, just plain daft really

couldn't agree more. I don't know how much people think ducks can eat, they lob whole slices at the poor things. I'm convinced they'd taste of bread if you tried eating one
