I have just found the attached photograph in a trunk of old papers, and a note on the back says that it is of Hay's Hill Farm, Silsden. It would have been taken c. 1870, I suspect.

Can anyone tell me anything about it? Or about its alleged owners in the early 1800s, Joshua and George Hudson?

According to the IGI
George Hudson christened 02 Mar 1806, Silsden, Yorks
Joshua Hudson christened 17 Jan 1808, Silsden, Yorks
Both sons of Matthew and Grace Hudson.

I see if I can find any link with the farm.

There is a Hay Hills Farm still on Hayhills Lane, off Horn Lane, leading from Bradley Road, Silsden. There is also an Upper Hay Hills Farm further up Horn Lane. For an old map of the farms in the 1850's, try:

www.old-maps.co.uk

A George Hudson, retired farmer, is in the 1881 census for Silsden. His age (75) matches the George Hudson christened in 1806. His address given in the modern census transcript is Bradley Road. This could be your Hudson of Hayhills Farm. There may be more address detail in the 'original'of the 1881 census which might confirm this if you viewed a copy.

I found a historic reference to "Hayhills, in the lordship of Silsden" here:
www.sutton-in-craven.org.uk/historyofsteeton1886.asp

and Google search came up with many current references to Upper Hayhills Farm and Hayhills House.

I came across your picture while researching my own family history in the Silsden area.

Joshua Hudson was my direct ancestor. Joshua married Esther Fort at Kildwick, 10 June 1833. He was a woolcomber, of "Silsden Moor" at the time. Esther's parents Henry and Elizabeth Fort lived at Hay Hills. I have a copy of Esther's death certificate - she died in "child bed" at Raikeshead (a neighboring farm), 3 July 1840. There were Forts farming at both Hayhills and Raikeshead for the rest of the 19th century.

My great-great-grandfather was Rev. William Hudson, Joshua and Esther's second son. William married Mary Elizabeth Charlton in 1862, and his ministry took them all over the country - their 11 children were born at Worksop, Sheffield, London and Lincoln and by 1901 they were living near Tonbridge in Kent. My great-grandfather Edward Hardwick Hudson was also a Methodist minister.

In 1851 Joshua was a woolcomber, with his children Grace and Matthew at Cringles. William was also at Cringles, with his grandmother Grace Hudson and uncles George and Henry and his cousin Grace Elizabeth Hudson. Joshua was still at Cringles in 1861 (with the same two children and a grandson George, who was probably Grace's son), as an agricultural labourer. In 1871 he was a farmer of 20 acres at Oldham (with the same family). By 1881 they were living at 11 Jay Street, Keighley. Joshua died at Keighley, 1 July 1883 and was buried at Silsden 4 July 1883.

I know rather less about Joshua's father, Matthew Hudson. He was buried 31 May 1842 at Silsden, aged 73. It is fairly likely that he was the Matthew Hudson, son of Joshua (of Langbar), baptised at Ilkley 14 April 1769, since there were no Matthew Hudsons of the right age baptised anywhere nearer to Silsden.

Matthew married Grace Hargett, 13 May 1805. Grace's family (who also used the surname Hardwick at various times) came from Addingham, but she was also descended from the Stirk family of Silsden Moor.

Matthew was a weaver at Silsden according to his marriage record. He was a weaver at Cringles in 1806 and 1810 according to the baptism records of his sons. By 1841 (when he was still at Cringles) he was an agricultural labourer.

Matthew and Grace had three other sons - Henry and George, neither of whom married, and Thomas Hudson, who was a farmer at Fowler Hill (another neighbouring farm which is now called Dalesbank).

The map at this location

mediafiles.thedms.co.uk/Publication/YS-Brad/cms/pdf/AroundSilsdenReservoir%20walk.pdf

seems to show Cringles manor as close to Hay Hills farm. So maybe Esther Fort and Joshua Hudson just had to walk across the field where the reservoir is now?
wink ;)
