IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : Silsden Schools |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) I am curious why, when Silsden has two excellent primary schools, people from the town send their children to other primary schools? No doubt there are many reasons, but I'd be very interested to hear a few? Of course everyone is, quite rightly, free to choose their children's education, but I'm still very curious. |

you know what curiosity did to the cat dont you alan? |

I sent our 2 children to Kildwick as it is a Church of England school and has more interest and weekly involvement with the church which we attend |

You should know I'm always curious 'skippy'. But the question was for a good reason, I was part of a discussion earlier this week on how we could attract more kids to the Silsden schools. So I'd like to hear opinions. |

When the 'league' tables first appear it was easy to guess what schools would be where, and that was how it appeared. Ilkley, Addingham etc. at the top, Keighley towards the bottom and Silsden in the middle. Basically they reflect the social economic environment that forms their main catchment area. Unfortunately to many people actually believe the league tables. Like OFSTED they are a political tool created for a variety of reasons, but mainly because politicians want to prove that they are doing something. If, like OFSTED they have had any effect on the quality of education then it is not reflected at 16 where to many kids are as thick as ever. Twas ever thus, but our elected leaders think they know better. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Isn't that a bit off topic 'wahiba'! The question was for a genuine reason to find out why parents do not send children to Silsden schools, not for yet another dig at Ofsted which would be better suited to opening up another topic! |

I was making the point that to many people take the league tables at face value and use the information on their choice of school. Because of the socio-economic situation of Silsden it does not come at the top of the 'league'. On the radio this morning there was a talk the basic premise of which was that the system of inspections, league tables and SAT tests has achieved nothing. In fact the law of diminishing returns is coming into play. Schools are so burdened with this stuff that the education of children is suffering. For the record my low opinions of all performance related pay/prod/promotion systems of which ofsted, league tables, targets etc. are the modern format was formed over 40 years ago when finding out that all the fancy piece work and bonus systems in factories were a total waste of time. They are the tools or poor management and if there is one thing this country suffers from top to bottom it is poor management. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) It is still off the topic 'wahiba'! It does nothing to answer the question asked of PARENTS in Silsden! But never mind, an honest attempt to find out why thwarted again! You are just repeating comments from other topics. Perhaps you should start your own Ofsted topic! You may as well close this one Peter, it's obviously a waste of time! |

League tables should be banned and children should goto the nearest school.Just think it would keep loads of vehicles of the road and help save th planet |

I'm not sure why "alan" can't get a reply to this one.....seems like a good question to ask. I can't help because I don't have any children going to Silsden primary schools, at least not for a couple of years when our grandson goes, but surely there must be someone out there (apart from "phill") who has made choices to send their children to non-Silsden schools? The other comments all seem not to be relevant. |

nope sorry .... Plumbajunior, Please put comments in a relevant topic. I have deleted your contribution to this thread because it was completely off topic. Peter |

Thanks for that, it's hard work 'carliol' trying to get info over those that want to impose their own agenda on the topic! Was a simple question, just looking for some simple answers |

I would make one response to 'wahiba' only and suggest that he reads this page, then sorts by VA, the Value Added column which is one of the most important factors - news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/education/04/school_tables/primary_schools/html/va_380.stm Sort of shoots down your socio economic comments, but why let the fact get in the way of a good monologue! Could we please get back to the topic now! |
|

there are lies, damned lies and statistics ![]() and I always add targets, performance related pay and league tables. Practically why bother to make a 'league' table and then provide fiddle figures to level it out. Fixing figures to make them look good is as old as civilisation. |
|
| alan |
That's a good argument 'wahiba' ignore the facts when they don't agree with your comments. Can we NOW get back to the topic, and it isn't oftsed! |
|
| wahiba |
Just looked at the 'league' table on the BBC website. Maths, Science, English tests!!!! at primary school. I remembers sums, reading writing rusty nails and bees. Is that the same thing? As for the fiddle factors, say no more. |
