Peter,
I see from recent postings that you are quite keen on stifling opinion and, consequently closing topics.
Please let the posters have their say. It is certainly interesting to read, even if their thoughts maybe somewhat controversial.

i agree, i've said as much previously. conversations naturally wander across topics, i've never quite understood why discussions are so closely moderated at times.

If you are refering to the scrapman topic then this forum is not the place to post anonymus accusations. The topic was about pictures and was being hijacked, so I took the decision to lock the thread.

I have said the same in the past too. I just cannot believe that it isn't accepted that conversations (threads) develop on this site.

If this is anything like a couple of owners clubs I'm members of with forums, there is precedence for website owners being liable for libel, defamation etc from poster on the forums. So the forums are moderated - which leads to complaints from posters - but funnily enough, none of the complaining posters have stepped up to put their house, livelihood, savings etc on the line to pay for any court action defence or penalities.

Owner's website, owner's rules. Seem fair enough to me. It's his house on the line.

A lot of people are being prosecuted for comments on Facebook and Twitter which have come back to haunt them after being posted in haste or anger.
I suppose Peter is trying to protect US from making such a gaffe. It's not just his house or reputation on the line, I guess, reading the terms and conditions.

Definately agree, a moderator is essential. When the mud slinging gets a bit close to the bone, it could get to the point of libel.
Peter does a great job of providing this facility, don't abuse it.

It’s not an anonymous accusation...and i would say I’m doing a service to the silsden public by letting them know what sort of people advertise on the site. i joined here to keep in touch with what’s going on in and around Silsden, alas but It seems that unless we are talking about dog poo the thread gets closed.
After a few days of seeing how its controlled I’d rather not be a part of it.

But I, for one, would still rather read lively debate, even if it goes off topic and maybe controversial rather than reading about a couple of blokes "adventures" or, as we read last year, the hourly whereabouts of a poor homeless man or, more recently, dog-poo-gate,

With regard to liable; as stated in the Terms & Conditions:

You remain solely responsible for the content of your messages, and you agree to indemnify and hold us harmless with respect to any claim based upon transmission of your message(s). We also reserve the right to reveal your identity (or whatever information we know about you) in the event of a complaint or legal action arising from any message posted by you.

So Peter should be OK from the Internet Police.

I do, however, agree that moderation is required; but just that the moderator, sometimes, "dips his nib" in too soon, particularly when things go "off topic"

This is the bit you need to note

... we reserve the right to delete any message for any or no reason whatsoever.

My forum so you play by my rules.

The thread was not closed because the topic subject was changed but because of accusations put on the topic from individuals which were affectively anonymous. Some posts are quite close to the wind and I try not to interfere with the thread but let it develop, but sometimes posters do overstep the mark and I have to do something about it. I do try to warn the poster before taking action but I afraid not all read the warning and carry on... sigh!!

This thread seems to have been "hijacked" by reference to the scrap-man thread. That is not my point at all.

If you mean bigoted or racist comments aren't tolerated then you're right. Or if you mean making unsupported anonymous accusations and slurs won't be put up with then you are spot on.

Of course if you don't enjoy using Peter's forum on HIS website then no-body is forcing you to read or post. I find it useful, informative, sometimes frustrating when people post silly, uninformed (I won't go so far as to say ignorant) things, and occasionally funny.

Peter i think now is the time to use your very earned and well-timed right to close this thread.

I think Peter does a good job of moderating this site for US to use, its a great site for Silsden-People to access information and spread news and information.

Lets not turn it nasty and make us all look like a bunch of ill-tempered and angst ridden grumpy-bums!happy :)

Fair play Peter!

Blimey ,i did see the scrap man posting up untill it went a bit pete tong, but this suject seems to have brought up a lot of bad feeling about certain individuals, i agree the forum needs a certain amount of mediation but maybe the individuals should defend themselves and people should leave peter alone for managing a forum i enjoy......i`ve seen quite a few comments on posts by the indivduals and they don`t hold back with there comments. just saying like.sad :(

Really not sure what you are saying here localman. Are you suggesting that your comment about it being a very PC forum and there being "bullies" on here are true of me and therefore they hurt me in some way?

If this is what you're trying to suggest, and I think it is, then my answer has two parts:-

1) being politically correct (PC) is all about going over the top when being careful about how we discuss gender, race, nationality and other traits that people have little control over. This is entirely different from telling people that their thinly veiled racist remarks are not acceptable.

2) I think I would find it very difficult to bully you localman. You can spout whatever you want and I can agree, disagree or ignore you (I do the latter most of the time). If you think people disagreeing with you and pointing out the fallacies or nonsense in some of the things you say is bullying you then you really need to grow a thicker skin.

In regards to having a life, well, I do and I really don't have the time to spend debunking your silly statements to be honest, which is why I ignore you most of the time and don't really post on here very much anymore.

I don't really know why I even bother giving you proper replies, it's not like you're ever going to take notice and change your ideas. It's not like I even care about your opinions, I guess I'm just a bit bored today wink ;)
