Topic : Traffic Management |
|
| Landrover |
It is time traffic management was taken seriously, I stand by previous comments that traffic lights are not the answer, parking in Kirkgate is a menace, the counter argument is it would create a rat run if banned. the junction of Elliot street and Kirkgate followed immediately by the zebra crossing, is a nightmare. Bell square junction was a bad decision from the outset. A simple solution would be to make Elliot street one way, traffic diverted either to Bell square or Aire View, or better still, reinstate the roundabout at junction of Briggate and Kirkgate, ban parking in Briggate, and divert traffic downwards. |
|
| hat |
1. ban right turns out of Elliot Street, make traffic wanting to turn right use aireview or go via bell square. 2. make aireview one way downwards, to run in the opposite direction of new road 3. mini roundabout at bell square/bolton road junction, or give bell square the priority making a stop junction on the bottom of bolton road. 4. extend the pavements out on dale view and all other bolton road junctions to slow traffic coming down bolton road and give better visibility to exiting traffic. 5. traffic lights on clog bridge/kirkgate junction |
|

Hat, good to see someone is thinking about the problems. I still say Elliot street should be one way, one of the reasons for the hold up on canal bridge is the entrance to Elliot street is too narrow, anything larger than a mini cannot turn right into Elliot street if any other vehicle is waiting to exit. As someone living on the east side of town I would benefit from your traffic light proposal, trying to turn right from clog bridge is sometimes impossible, however it would cause more problems than it would solve. Keep the suggestions coming, |
|
| grandad |
Hat I would agree with most of your suggestions, but if traffic lights are put at the bottom of elliot st then the whole of the fields at the steeton side of Woodside road would be developed into housing, creating even more congestion. |
|
| hat |
clog bridge/elliot street is a tricky one to engineer. you could potentially make it a one-way entrance only allowing left turning traffic from the canal bridge to enter, which would give the necessary room for buses and large vehicles, with no exit - again making the traffic use new road or aire view. one thing i really think should be done is to have 'local traffic only' signs on the trunk road and addingham bypass for silsden, directing through traffic via the A65/A59 to link up with the A650. this would only deter, not enforce but it would remove a fair chunk of the heavy goods vehicles using the A6034 as a run through between the aire valley and the A65 |
|
| Raver |
You only have to glance at the map to see that the A6034 is the only feasible route from Wharfedale to Airedale between Otley and Skipton. Nobody in their right mind would consider a detour. History & Geography has landed Silsden with this hideous traffic problem. Its great to see some positive solutions being put forward but I fear these will only be short term. We all know new developments are planned in the area. It may not be in Silsden but for certain the extra traffic will come our way. Can you imagine even a 10% increase? The A6034 needs to be diverted - we need bypass! |
|
| dogcatcher |
a great start would be to put a 7 1/2 ton (unless for local access) limit on the road that would get the large lorries off |
|
| hat |
Thing is though, a bypass is only needed for those couple of peak hours. It would seem a real shame to lose the countryside for that. A few engineering tweaks and decent signage could make a real difference |

The proposed pink rose route from Colne to Skipton to take the bulk of the through traffic from Silsden, a lot of which comes from the M56 at Colne. |

Congratulations to the Councillors in Colne/Foulridge who have the sense to see that the only way to remove the blight of heavy through traffic is to go for a by-pass. Looks like they will achieve success! Although this sets a great example as to what should happen in Silsden I don't think it will have much impact on traffic through our town. Just look at the map - any routing towards Skipton adds miles to a route from Colne to Wharfedale. Besides I think most of our traffic problems stem from local journeys from Wharfedale to Airedale. As stated previously we are stock with the A6034 being the only direct route between the two valleys for many miles. |

what about a POLICE officer- officers , at peak times directing the traffic chaos |

I remain a firm advocate of removing all through traffic from Silsden with the only long term solution being a by-pass of some kind. However its great to see people putting forward some small scale measures which will give us some brief respite before we have to face the inevitable traffic growth from new housing expansion in Wharfedale and Airedale. The Elliot Street/Clog Bridge Junction features high on the issues. With a staggered junction close to a pedestrian crossing and a blind hump back bridge it looks like the worse nightmare from the Highway Code! How about this idea for an 'inner relief' road? As mentioned above we are almost certainly likely to see new housing development below Woodside Road and off Sykes Lane. The proposal would be to incorporate an extension of Dradishaw Road south across a new canal bridge to join Keighley Road at the new Tesco development. This would give easy access to all the west side of town if travelling towards Keighley. It would remove such traffic from Elliot Street and might even allow the closure of the dangerous Elliot Street junction. ...and what about cost..??! Well if our Councillors get working on it I'm sure any development at Sykes lane and Woodside could be made conditional on funding such a road. The junction with Keighley Road is already planned with traffic management incorporated thanks to Tesco. So there is the potential to get this infrastructure for FREE! And before we hear from the regular 'no' brigade just think what the traffic will be like if we get development at Sykes Lane and off Woodside Road without a new relief road...! |
|
| hat |
I like it raver. So you would extend dradishaw down the side of the allotments? |
|
| Raver |
Yes - the new Dradishaw road would run from Skipton Road down to the canal and then swing around to join Keighley Road at the new traffic controlled junction at Tescos. This would provide a second canal crossing and at a stroke allow local traffic accces from the west end of town to Keighley without the need to use Elliot Street. Aireville, New Road Bell Square. I suggest there needs to be some urgency to move on this idea. If developments at Sykes lane and below Woodlands go ahead without this provision we will loos this opportunity forever. Plus all the extra traffic from such developments will be dumped on the current road system.... |

Raver how would your plan take any wagons off Silsden main street. The only route for a by-pass would be to the East. Until the Government and Bradford push for more houses to pay for it then it's not going to happen, shame but true. |
|
| Raver |
Just to repeat what I said previuosly. The only answer to getting rid of through traffic is a by-pass - so that has my full support, whether East or West of the town. The Dradishaw proposal is for local traffic only. By providing a second canal crossing to the West it would take this local traffic away from the Elliot Street bottleneck. I would hope our Councillors could negotiate this for FREE! So I agree, no answer to the volumes using the A6034 as a cut through. This problem will only get worst and worse until our main street shops have to admit defeat... We should also be campaigning for a by-pass now! |

Interesting Spanish Omelette supporting Raver (who both support the Tesco application) and they are Silsden football supporters and have been promised a 6 a side all weather pitch if the Tesco application gets through..... mmmm |

...as you can see we have to get the knockers...! The subject of this blog is how to reduce traffic congestion in the town. Nothing constructive in the last message is there?!. Peter can you remind correspondents to get back on subject? |
|
| skippy |
raver where do you propose to put the new buissness park that's planned by bfd? don't forget that buisnesses bring biggg trucks, and people in cars to work. I am knocking what you are saying but Tesco and football are not the be all and end all of silsdens traffic problems. I am here to help so please don't take offence to my response. |
|
| Raver |
Don't know how Tesco got into this blog. The proposal is to open up a new route from Keighley Road to the west of town. Hundreds of households would be able to avoid Kirkgate and the current canal bridge, bringing much need relief to the main street which is gradually declining under the chaotic traffic pressure. What was a small town shopping centre finds its self either side of a main road artery carrying mainly non Silsden residents. In the current economic climate funding is the obvious blockage to the idea and just to stop it being a pipe dream there is the idea that negotiations with developers could get us the funds with no charge on the taxpayer. Since the blog was about ideas to reduce the traffic problem I think any proposals for a new business park must be seriously questioned as I agree we cannot face more lorries and in bound workers cars..... |
|
| grandad |
Did any of you who are proposing a new road to the west of the Town go the the two judicial inquiry's? If you had you would know why the inspector through the idea out, all it would do is open that side of the town to even more development. The proposed "Bypass" was nothing more than a shoddy designed access road into the 2,500 new housed which were there to pay for it. All that is needed to remove most of the Towns traffic problems if for there to be a HGV ban through the town. |
|
| Raver |
...and so the answer to the traffic issue is 'do nothing' - No wonder we are seeing the town centre die on its feet. The sad thing is that housing development will come to this area - maybe not in Silsden - but we have the main trunk route in the area right through the middle of our community. It will only get worse, much worse and mainly with cars not HGVs. Silsden will wither under the weight of traffic coming from outside - surely we must think of ways to stop this. Doing nothing is not an option...! Question to those who have lived in Silsden as long as me -is the traffic situation better now than in your youth....? |

Set off down Dradishaw from Skipton Road.At the junction with Elliott St and Woodside Road, where would you go then? |

Proposal: From Elliot St junction continue Dradishaw Road down to the canal. Over a new bridge when swing through proposed Sykes Lane development to reach Keighley Road by telephone exchange. Note that this is not a by-pass the but a local road for local people. 100s of households to the west of town could get to Keighley without going through the Elliot St/Clog Bridge bottleneck. This should show an immediate improvement on traffic flow in the town. A quick fix - but it will only buy time. I think a full by-pass to eliminate all the growing through traffic will become enevitable. |

quoteInteresting Spanish Omelette supporting Raver (who both support the Tesco application) and they are Silsden football supporters and have been promised a 6 a side all weather pitch if the Tesco application gets through..... mmmm Just one HUGE floor in your post Fred is we have not been promised an all weather pitch, the landowner has just added it in their plans to gain planning permission for our future development, saving the club hundreds of pounds. All they promised was land not needed by any superstore, the paddock, which they currently let us have rent free for our younger juniors, and a 44 space car park next to it. Rather flaws your argument, and totally off the actual issue of future road management which we should all support. |

YEP i have it , lets get rid of the pelican crossing outside betfred , make the hump canal bridge 20 mph and put a spot roundabout in at the junction of Elliot Street . job done £50.00 quid of white paint . |

| bobber |
please excuse me if it's been said before. i may have missed a thread or two, but why don't we follow bingley and restrict parking all the way through the centre? |
|

quotewhy don't we follow bingley and restrict parking all the way through the centre? That's great on bingley but the difference is bingley high street is wider, and due to bthe bingley bypass very few hgv's So we need a silsden bypass! Anyone remember bingley before the bingley bypass?!!!! |
|
| hat |
I agree the bingley bypass is a godsend to the people who live or work in the town centre but that was bulit within an existing brown corridor between the railway and canal, not on pristine countryside |

quoteplease excuse me if it's been said before. i may have missed a thread or two, but why don't we follow bingley and restrict parking all the way through the centre? got it right bobber......sooner Kirkgate has double yellows the better |
|
| old_miner |
Double yellow lines down Kirkgate would make it a race track. A dangerous one as idiots would still park on the double yellow lines. The present set up, awful as it is does provide practical traffic management. A bypass is needed to the right of the town past the grid distribution point. No one in their right mind is going to want housing under all those wires so a road is the best bet. From the bridge, past the industrial estate, with access to the estate, across country coming out below Cringles. This is the logical solution and route. So how do we get logic to work? Keighley is a marginal constituency. Silsden is a bit of a Tory town so a promise from labour to build it seems the best bet to me. I am not holding my breath....but I was wrong about Aldi so maybe I am wrong in holding my breath!!!!!!!!!!! PS Aldi has not been started or built yet. maybe i will have to hold my breath? |
|
| dexter |
this post has been edited 1 time(s) old miner.....if you mean practical traffic management is long delays and increased pollution from exhaust fumes, then fine! There would be no race track, as there are 3 crossings to slow things down, as well as the hump outside the town hall. Time for a simple change....try it for a year and see the difference. |

quoteThere would be no race track, as there are 3 crossings to slow things down, as well as the hump outside the town hall. Time for a simple change....try it for a year and see the difference. You can see how this would work now - just take a walk along Kirkgate and down Keighley Road at, or before, about 6am on a Sunday. On a Sunday morning there are no cars parked along Kirkgate but there is some traffic. All do more than 30mph, and along Keighley Road the 30mph and the 40mph stretch is definitely a mystery speed limit. At that time of the morning if you are hard of hearing do not cross the road. ![]() |
