IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Still listed on websites like 192.com and yell.com, they moved to Cononley Business Park www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?keywords=briggs+bros+silsden+ltd&location=&scrambleSeed=36939614&searchType=&M=&bandedclarifyResults=&ssm=1&workflow=cn&autocomplete=cn Although the website is no longer active so maybe they are no more? |

Briggs Bros were in Silsden for over 100 years. Business started by local lad Fred Briggs in a little room at his Keighley Road home, with two simple printing presses. Became successful, so moved to much larger premises in Elliott Street and was joined in the business by brother Clifford. Clifford became the better known: he performed in concerts and owned Silsden's only cinema, the Picture Palace, for most of its life, where he painted the walls with palm trees. Business passed to other generations of the family but closed in Silsden in the late 1990s. Workers complained that too much focus had been given to printing bingo tickets in the final years, and other orders had not been chased. |

Thanks Greenlanes for information regarding Briggs Bros. In my youth i lived in Elliott St.and Briggs Bros.was a large firm employing a large workforce. On leaving school in 1957 i applied for a job there but was unsuccessful. My uncle Leonard Green worked there most of his life.Does anyone remember him.? He lived in Laurel Grove. Silsden. Briggs was just one of the large employers located on Elliott St. at that time. The others being Hill.Benson and Baily. And Walter Crane Ltd. both textile mills. Does anyone know when they closed down? |

Email recieved from Jim Crowther: Riddlesden Hall was purchased in 1934 by twin Briggs brothers and donated to the National Trust. The Briggs twin brother's and sister inherited the business from their mother and had to reduce and restructure the business after the demise of bingo tickets. (He had to sell the premises and relocate in rented premises in Cononley). |

I remember Mr West, gave me a few slaps ... him and Mr Mitchell certainly made the most out of corporal punishment. Them were the days!!! In regards to the paper mill, i spent my childhood playing in the mill yards and begging the staff for free paper off-cuts... which i got...stuff of memories! ![]() |
