Topic : chaos on roads |

just listened to radio leeds which says that traffic is gridlocked between steeton through silsden to addingham due to snow!!!!! I am looking out of my window and cannot see any, I live in silsden. The problem seems to be near cringles, some people are abandoning their cars. Anyone know anything about it |
|
| alliecoward |
yeah we were there about 4.15pm, it was'nt too bad going up and over cringles, but the cars coming down were skidding all over the road. |

i came on bypass from bingley to silsden last night at 5.15-5.30pm less than normal traffic on the other hand miss fraggle set off from leeds at 3.20pm by 4pm was on burley in wharfedale bypass (A65) and finally got home at 6.20pm yes 2.20 to get about 7 miles |

i was stuck in ilkley yesterday afternoon for almost an hour due to one freak snow storm & some very poor driving. once through ilkley to sandbeds it was fine & clear again all the way until i hit the back of the traffic queuing to get down cringles. after half an hour i decided to head back down & over towards skipton which again was completely snow free so i ducked over the tops from draughton. this was fine until i reached prestons farm when again the road became ice covered & the drop down raikes road was heart in mouth stuff. i had to stop at one point to let some cars up & the car just continued on with the ABS rattling like mad. 2.5 hours to get from leeds to silsden, 2 of which was just getting from ilkley |

so where were the gritters? or did the "sensors" tell them the roads were ok. We seem to be pretty poor at coping with bad weather in this country |
|
| pumbajunior |
i saw 2 out in bingley 1 in keighley n 1 on the AV bypass |
|

Saw one in Silsden last night as well. |

There has obviously been a gritter on Ings Way during the night or early this morning. I'm sure they're doing their best. |

The problem was the useless drivers, who have no idea how to drive in slippery conditions, but still go out onto the roads, blocking them for those who do know how to drive in such conditions, even some 4x4 drivers I saw need to get some lessons, all 4 wheels locked and all you have is a 2 ton sledge. The main problem I found was that they braked to go down hill then panicked when the wheels locked, keeping their foot on the brakes instead of releasing the brake and letting the wheels rotate, I didn’t find any problem other than the roads clogged by other cars. Next time try this! Bottom gear, left foot on brake pedal, right one on accelerator gently balance between the two, enough brake to slow the car down, enough accelerator to just keep the wheels turning. It works for me. |

Yup 'grandad' think all the 2 wheel drive cars should be banned from the road when it's snowing or icy ![]() Was fun in the snow Saturday morning with no one else about |
|
| skippy |
now now Alan dont be naughty about 2 wheel drives |
|
| alan |
Why not "skippy" I even drive one myself, very occasionally that is! |
|
| grandad |
Alan, Even some of the dickheads in 4x4s couldn't hack it in the snow, I saw one who was afraid to go down Bradley Road and heard of a porsca cian or whatever they are called, who came over the canal bridge and slid all the way down to the end of elliott st. It's not the cars it's the bad drivers. |
|
| alan |
I know 'grandad', just stirring it |

Do you think it is about time, that the driving test was made a lot more comprehensive? It should include motorway, night, and ice driving, and all drivers should have to take a medical every year,( after all we have to get the cars tested if they are more than three years old,) and a retest at least every five years. Drivers kill around 3,500 every year and we do nothing about it. |

alot of the problem is cars these days have massive wide tyres even most 4x4's are crap in snow due to this if you want a good snow car 2wd = 2cv 4wd = landy defender skinny tyres = best for snow n ice look at wrc cars in 1000 lakes (finnish rally) or swedish rally really thin tyres (they have studs too illegal in this country) |
|
| wahiba |
Skinny tyres are not much good in soft sand either. Flat out in bottom low hoping for enough grip to keep going is quite an interesting experience. Did it though. some pics here: www.siltec.co.uk/oman_pictures.html |

Mine was ok in the snow in that Dales Saturday 'pumbajunior', the only difference was the numpties were still in bed! |
|
| grandad |
Most 4x4's these days are of the sporty type the BMW, and that ilk, these all come with loads of extras for making them go faster, ride smoother and look more expensive, they all lack the basic requirement for any vehicle that is going to encounter difficult condition, i.e. a good driver! That is why when you buy a new Landrover they offer you a free driving course where they teach you how to handle it in most conditions you will come across. |
|
| alan |
Notice BMW, Porsche, Audi, Volvo, VW, etc don't do that ![]() Done that been there and going again soon 'cos it's fun |
|
| pumbajunior |
yup thats most of the problem alot of 4x4 drivers (NOT all) think they are invulnerable just because all 4 wheels drive (i used to live in eldwick bingley) the stupid 4x4 drivers (who couldnt handle the conditions) tried going down park road to bingley (extremly steep) with 3 inch of snow failing to relise 4x4 only works when the wheels are driving before anyone says hill desent etc these were old crappy 4x4's so wouldnt have low box etc |
|
| grandad |
Proper old 4x4's did have a low box! they didn't have all the fancy extras like traction control or hill decent though. Like I said before left foot on brake, right one on throttle. |
|
| pumbajunior |
yeah but the ones i was talking of werent land rovers or land cruisers just crappy old 4x4's like sierra 4x4 etc and were supprised when they were going down a steep snowy hill hit the brakes and locked up all wheels (you could hear the cogs in there brain working but but but ive got a 4x4 there good in snow) not if your tyres are wrong for snow and your going downhill and you cant drive |
|
| alan |
Sierra 4x4 'pumbajunior'? blimey thought you were only a young lad! |
|
| pumbajunior |
youngish 34 my second car was a sierra estate not 4x4 though was fun (if thats the right word) getting a rear drive estate car up to eldwick in the snow (with no weight in the back) |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) I was actually stuck in that traffic chaos last Thursdsay. It took me 2 and a/hlf hours to get from Burley in Wahrfdale to Silsden There was no obvious reason other than the road was a little icy and there was a half inch of snow. I had heard all kinda of things on the radio about how bad the conditions were on the road, they were not that bad, I have th worlds smallest and girliest car and I had little trouble. |

Back in 1973 I used to have a Ford Cortina! That was crap in the snow unless I loaded the boot up with everything heavy I could get in it, then with it's backend draging on the floor it would go nearly anywhere in second gear, gust the occasional touch of hand brake would stop the back wheels spinning going up hill and if I was going down hill I partly applied the hand brake and drove it down, I never got stuck, and we used to have real snow in them days! |
|
| pumbajunior |
i seem to remember my dad doing similar in a mk3 cortina in the late 70's they beached pretty easy on snow |
