IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. I am trying to get insurance cover that includes flooding. Does anyone know if there has been any flooding within 50m of the old wine bar / hairdesign in the last ten years? We are much higher up than the beck at the back. Thanks Jan |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Probably the closest was the floods on 21 Jan 2008 when a drain was blocked at the bottom of Howden Road and the police shut the road, but on Kirkgate there was no flooding. You should be fine for insurance purposes. For the pictures see www.silsden.net/pictures/floods_jan2008/index5.htm# PS the police car was stopping traffic from going on down Keighley Road because water was running across the road by (what is now) Aldi. |

1825 One of the worst ever storms of rain and hail hits Craven, sweeping down a mill at Cringles and two cottages, three blacksmiths shops and two bridges in Silsden. Almost every house flooded. |

This is from a report into planning application for the former wine bar Conclusions • The properties are in Flood Zone 3 where residenti al development can be viewed as being appropriate. • The lower ground floor level is set 0.888m above t he 1 in 100 year (1%) modeled flood level in the adjacent Silsden Beck. This gives it s ufficient margin of safety to allow for the effects of climate change on the predicted future f lood levels. • Added protection is afforded to the property by th e raised stone flagged patio which is raised 1.05m above the lower ground floor level. (s ee section through the site) • The proposed conversion works will not be creating any self-contained living accommodation at the lower ground floor level; each dwelling will be a duplex unit. There will be an internal staircase giving access t o the ground floor which is 3.628m above the 1 in 100 (1%) modeled floor level, which will give a safe escape route for any residents in the event of flooding. |

quoteCan anybody remember Bonaparts being flooded , 2005/6 /7 i think, just before it opened as a new venture. Among the worst-effected areas was Silsden, where flooding submerged the main street in six inches of water in the early hours. Silsden Beck had overflowed into Bridge Street and down into Kirkgate. It washed into a few businesses on the east side of Kirk-gate, including Bonaparte's restaurant and the Hair Design Centre. Judith Russell owns the Hair Design centre, where the floor was three inches deep with water. She says: "The floor is completely damaged - we will have to replace it. "With the Christmas rush, it couldn't have happened at a worse time," adds Judith. Rita Twigg had been helping her son Martyn at Twigg's Newsagent's on the west side of Kirkgate. She says: "I've never seen it as bad as this." www.keighleynews.co.uk/news/8060533.Flood_chaos_hits_area/ |

If my memory serves me correctly..... The water overflowed from the drain at the end of Hillcrest Avenue because it was blocked under Bridge Street. Because the water came out of the drain which was on Hillcrest Avenue, which is an unadopted road, Bradford refused to admit it was their responsibility to unblock the drain. This was before the flood, so when the heavy rain came the resulting flood, which ran the length of Kirkgate was the consequence. (Does this sound familiar re Mitchell Lane / St Johns Street?) |
