How genuine is this rumour?
Silsden as an area does not seem to fit the bill for any Lidl I know - and I use them for the special offers. Usually shop as well and I must admit that milk at 75p (Aldi the same) beats the 86p everyone else charges. |

There is a Lidl in Hayle, which is about the same size as Silsden |

@gazzer same size as Silsden or same size as the plot it is rumoured for? Can't see Lidl as much of a threat to the co-op. It is a discount store so it will compete more with Aldi and Netto. |

Same size as Silsden.I dont think the plot as it stands would be big enough for a Lidl. Once Netto closes there will be a market for a "Lidl" in the area although Lidl probably still favour Skipton, I would guess |

The most likely spot for Lidl around here is next to Aldi in Keighley! Remember it is personal. The two empires were started by the same family who fell out and went their own ways. Only UK company I know of who did that were Foden and ERF.
If possible one always opens next to the competition. Some distance away and you will only possibly share the business. Next door and you can take most of the business.

Last "rumour" I heard was that the most likely site for a Lidl would be the Netto in Keighley when Asda finally decide to sell it. |

Asda wanted to compete with Tesco Metro stores and as such bought Netto UK. Because of competition law they are not allowed two shops close together like Keighley Asda and netto stores. They had to sell a number of Netto stores near Asda's. Morrisons bought most of those on sale but as yet I dont think anyone has taken on the Keighley site. This would make the Keighley area ideal for a discount supermarket like Lidl. Not sure Keighley Netto would be quite big enough for them so perhaps they will see what happens and then look at opening in the area. |

Would that be Hayle in Cornwall ? stayed there on Holiday last Summer, Near St Ives Bay. Surly Silsden is big enough for another Supermarket ? Steeton folk would probably shop here as well. Lets hope it comes off. |

Be careful what you wish for! A few years ago we had:
2 greengrocers A fish monger A haberdashery A sell everything (but booze) corner shop A sell everything (especially booze) corner shop 4 butchers An electrical store 3 fish n chip shops There were 2 florist There were no newsagents open on a Sunday and you had to go to a Sunday newspaper outlet that only opened on Sunday.
.. and before you say the good ol' days are gone and we should move on, it wasn't that long ago.... and then the Co-op expanded and started selling 7 days a week and was open from 8am - 10pm
The green grocers and the fish monger soon went out of business One of the butchers closed because the hours were just too long and there was little profit when people just popped into the Co-op for a snack and came out with the Sunday joint. The haberdashery closed because the oner retired and the place became part of a chain chemist. Many of the corner shop bits and pieces (like firelighters and matches) were stocked in the Co-op and it was just convenient to buy these things while you were in the Co-op. The corner shop that sold mostly booze was kept in business by the local youth but couldn't compete with the Co-op prices. The electrical store just didn't have the turnover to keep up with the changing technology and the Co-op sold cheap basic electrical items. The Co-op sells flowers, if you want a basic bunch of flowers where do you buy them from? Because the Co-op started to sell flowers and newspapers the local petrol station does as well.
I'm sure there are many shops I have missed and forgotten but a national store can employ people to work unsociable hours when the sole trader cannot. These people deserve a life and can't afford to open 8am - 10 pm 7 days a week.
Be careful what you wish for! |
