Hi 'Skippy' - the response I have had from West Yorkshire Fire Service is that there are no such plans laid down in any way at the moment, however "deep cuts in the Fire Service are anticipated in the near future."

There are similar rumours going around about Keighley Station and we have received the same response for those.

I can get no one so far to give me any better confirmation that Silsden Fire Station itself is likely to close.

I agree cuts have to be made. But is it really a good idea to cut an emergancy service so that should an emergancy arise the responce time is longer?

Is comunity funding/ fund raising an option should people feel strongly enough to want to keep it open?

Latest news station will be closed with houses built on the site within 4 years which also means 18 blokes that have given up days nights weekends and even bank holidays will be chucked on the scrap heap.
we need to do something about this either local MPs or councillors must be contacted to fight off the closure

9th March 2011
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service can confirm that the cause of a house fire which occurred in the early hours of this morning, in High Mill Lane, Addingham, was due to smoking materials.
Firefighters from Ilkley and Silsden were called to the house at 4am and rescued an elderly lady, who unfortunately died. They tackled the fire using two hose reels and positive pressure ventilation.
The house did have smoke detectors which were working
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Craig McIntosh, Director of Fire Safety, said: “Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of this lady. It is a tragic coincidence that this fire occurred today, on No Smoking Day, and we sincerely hope that it will focus the minds of others to pay particular attention to safety when smoking in the home.” bit.ly/fqePiY

Yes Skippy you are so right! if they try to close our station one excuse they might try and use is that Keighley is only 5 mins away and fully manned, but how often is the trunk road closed and the old road clogged solid, then it wont be just five mins.

I think what they are doing is increase response times to 9 minutes. This will then let them close down more fire stations.

The Silsden station is an integral part of the town and must stay open!

Praise For On-Call Service
Major changes made at on-call (retained) fire stations across West Yorkshire are proving a huge success.
A year ago more than £1m. was set aside to boost the availability of fire engines crewed by on-call firefighters, improve training and expand community safety work.
Appliance availability is now at 94 per cent (compared to 88 per cent in 2008/9), weekly training has increased from three to four hours per person and more than 2,200 home fire safety checks were carried out in the nine months to December 2010.
“On-call staff provide a vital and professional service to some of our more isolated communities and here in West Yorkshire we were determined to give them the tools they needed to get on with the job,” explained Deputy Chief Fire Officer Steve Beckley.
Practical steps included:
* help from wholetime staff to provide managerial leadership, address crewing shortages and increase the number of home fire safety checks
* a cap on routine non-operational tasks.
“ Better management and better trained firefighters has led to safer firefighting, safer communities and improved value for money. I pay tribute to all concerned,” added Mr. Beckley.
* Retained firefighters are on-call from home or other employment to respond to 999 calls therefore must live/work near their local station. Many can only commit to a limited number of on-call hours.
* West Yorkshire has 13 on-call stations: Haworth, Silsden, Ilkley, Otley, Featherstone, Hemsworth, Mirfield, Skelmanthorpe, Holmfirth, Marsden, Meltham, Slaithwaite and Mytholmroyd.

I hope she is ok.
Ten minutes can make a whole lot of difference.
I'm sure part of the propaganda was/is front line services wouldn't be cut >:
I take it this only applies to some parts of the UK?

Is the closure confirmed?
Is there anyway we can express our concern?

Stealth!!.I have just been reading an old newspaper Anyone remember when British Railways wanted to shut down the Settle/Carlisle line. They diverted main line trains away from the line then claimed there was not enough call for the line and proposed closure.
Of course I am not suggesting there would be anyone at fire HQ would propose such a thing for the fire service. There job is to protect lives and they wouldn't be able to sleep on a night should anything bad happen.

you carnt get rid of a engine from our service what do we do if they is a huge emergancy we carnt wait 4 the engines to come from keighley its to far away, we need to keep silsden fire service up and running.and keep all our engines. here. 1 of my dads uncles was in the silsden fire service in 1929. silsden has expanded in size a hell of a lot since 1929. so does this not mean our engines need to stay in silsden. surely we arnt gunna let our engines go.

I wonder if one of the Silsden firefighters could post the time it took from their alerters going off,to time of arrival at the Silsden house fire. Then we could compare this with an attendance from Keighley fire station, and not just presume it would take 10 minutes longer.

Re smoke alarms. Correctly sited and working smoke alarms give occupants such an early warning to make your escape. Home fire safety advice is availiable free from all fire stations, and if certain criteria are met smoke alarms are fitted.Im all for the fire stn staying open, all Im saying is smoke alarms save lives.

Victor, cobbydaler is correct i was a fireman for 30yr both in silsden and keighley and smoke alarms are very inportant in this day and age and they need siteing correctly ,if you want a fire safety survey done on your property just contact your local fire station and they will send someone out to help you and im sure if needed they will fit smoke alarms free of charge

Very true Bobt. Just google "saved by smoke alarm" to see how you should have a smoke alarm.
I would also recommend a carbon monoxide alarm which is just as important as a smoke alarm.
