At a meeting in the townhall tonight clr Mallinson said Silsden town council should move from the council chamber to somewhere else in the building. And if they didn't like it they should look for somewhere else for council meetings.Have you upset him again Skippy?.

Sounds like a silly suggestion it would stop groups using another room.
We need more space in Silsden not less.

Clr Mallinson said the council room was not fit to hold meetings "too small" and when the Townhall was refit the councill would have to move to another room. If they did not like this because they paid no rent they might like to find somewhere else to hold there meetings. And there were lots of members of the public there.Mallinson was out of order, why have I never seen him before. Is he looking for votes.

Whenever I have attended a council meeting (as a member of the public) there has always been plenty of space. If there is a popular subject to be discussed, such as the Local Development Framework proposals, then it's held in a larger room, but this is outside a normal council meeting.

An excellent point was made by countryman, move the council chamber and another large and useful room would be lost.

Councillor Mallison is due for re-election at the next local council elections.

I am in full support of the Parish council and if they had known what was going to be discused at this meeting someone would have been there to represent them.I went thinking that it was to talk about the History group.

I never saw any publicity about this meeting, I am sure a lot of people would have been interested in the suggestion that the library might be relocated to the town hall and the land sold for development. How did you(victor) find out about it?

gingo I am a member of St James PCC and an invitation was sent to the PCC.I was concerned that a small group of people where meeting with two councilors and two council officials discussing plans to close the Library and move it to the Townhall and sell the building in Welsley place. The way they were talking the work could start within six months, more information is required and the rest of Silsden should be consulted not just interest groups.

I was at the council planning meeting and as far I was aware none of my fellow councillors knew that a meeting was taking place to discuss the future of the Library. We were aware of a meeting in another room but this was supposedly a local history group. Given Cllr Mallinson refusal to attend STC meetings and communicate with STC it would appear he acting alone on this issue.
It is for the people Silsden to decide what they want NOT Cllr Mallinson

Yes pumbajunior that is what my wife and I thorght we were going to.When the council official began saying the Townhall needed about £100000 and the Library needed £190000 and the building in Wesley place needed thousands spending on them I became suspicious. And when Mallinson put in his bit saying the Parish council had one project (building in the park) and brad met had another (the Townhall)he was being devisive by making derogatory remarks about the Parish council.

What were the derogatory comments about the Town Council? Sounds like a set upto me wonder why Town Councillors weren't invited. Surely something this big requires full public consultation.

If this is local government in action, no wonder only 30% of people bother to vote.
Time to change the system.

I was also at the meeting on Thursday night. The purpose was to discuss Bradford Council's proposal to dispose of the current library building, which is no longer fit for purpose, and the building behind it at Wesley Place, and invest the money in the Town Hall. This would include provision of full disabled access, clearing the maintenance backlog (£180,000) and refurbishing the those aspects of the building that need it.

The plan includes re-locating the library in the Town Hall, which would be open every day from morning through into the evening, according to usage. The Town Hall would be a centre for existing users, including Town Council meetings, and for new users. It could include space for displays of various kinds, information about local activities and events, Silsden's history, information for visitors to the area, a stage for performances of various kinds, a venue for other events and private parties. The aim would obviously be to make much fuller use of the building than at present. The Town Hall, on the main street in the middle of Silsden, is ideally placed to become an important hub in the life of the town
rather than the sad and somewhat unwelcoming building it currently is.

Finally, space inside the building would be designed to maximise flexible use, including the library area, so a meeting of the Town Council could take place alongside other events, as it does now.

The way Silsdener2 explains it, the idea of the Town Hall being a local focal point makes a lot of sense. However, any money arising from sale of the library should stay in Silsden for the benefit of the people here.
The idea should not conflict with skippy's idea for the new park development...why can't we have both? Keep the political point scoring out of it...what is best for Silsden should be the outcome happy :)

Mallinson said "the council chamber was too small and the meetings should be held in another part of the townhall"ie get the tables and chairs out in a room with duel purpose. He also said "and because they paid no rent if they did not like that idea they might find somewhere else to hold meetings".In my opinion every time he spoke about the Parish council it was in a derogatory manner and as if the Parish council was irrelevant. And I was so annoyed with his attitude that I told him "he was out of order".

Silsdener2 Do you know why a meeting with two council officials and two brad met councilors discussing matters that will effect most people in Silsden was not widely advertised ? To be told that the work could start within six months makes me think the decision has already been made.

beware of rose tinted glasseswink ;) bradford council yesterday sent the town clerk an email asking to meet with us regarding their proposals for the town hall.i will let you know when that meeting will take place.suggetions for selling assets in silsden and useing the money to refurb the town hall is laughable, all monies raised by selling assets goes back to the gaping black hole which is bradford council ,andrew mallinson is only interested in things that benefit him.we the town council were not invited to the meeting on thursday night ,had we been invited we would have made sure somebody was present,as for the new build project in the park this is an idea that came about from speaking to the sporting groups that use the already delaperdated buildings that are there, again this has not even been on the council adgenda, again when we are to discuss this project i will let you all know. dont forget rose tinted glasseswink ;)wink ;)

If the library does locate to the Town Hall, will there be provisions made for wheelchair access. At the present time there is a ramp and side door entrance at the library. If not, this is just another place I will not be able to use like the Post Office and most shops.

The council room is smaller than the library so is the proposal to downsize the library?
The furniture in the Council room and the civic regalia etc are not going to make it easy to relocate to another room. Or is it the idea we just throw out the civic history of Silsden?
That would be ironic a history group wanting to get rid of the civic history and furniture paid for by Sildeners!!!!

There's no need for anyone to get hot under the collar!
Silsden Community Arts and Heritage have been interested for quite some time in preserving and modernising the Town Hall with full disabled access.(This has been documented in the local press) Members have twice attended town council meetings with our ideas.
By coincidence, Bradford Met have now come up with a plan for ensuring the hall's survival. We urged them that existing user groups, and possible new ones, be briefed about the proposals as soon as possible. In no way was it an underhand meeting - community groups as diverse as the Camera Club, British Legion, Silsden Community Productions, the Art Club, dance group, the history group, town band, schools and disabled representatives were there- and it was only a first stage in Bradford's consultation process with local politicians and people. Over 50 representatives were there; asked, at the end of the meeting and after a healthy discussion, what they thought of the Bradford plan as outlined by two council officers, only three people were not in favour. But it was the start of a local debate, not the end of it.
Silsden Community Arts and Heritage have absolutely no wish to get caught up in politics or political squabbles. That is why we have welcomed the Town Council chair Chris(and vice-chair) to two of our own meetings, and some of our officers meet regularly with Chris to discuss our hopes for Silsden, the most recent meeting being only last week. We have assured him that we are not in competition with his scheme to bring new sports facilities to the park; indeed we have offered him our backing and help for any project which enhances life in Silsden. Let's study all plans carefully before rushing to judgement and work out what's best for Silsden and future generations.

greenlanes do the Parish council use the townhall? if so why were they not invited. Also no proper vote count was taken, only a rough for and against no abstentions were taken, and most of us wanted more information. It may be good for the few but is it good for Silsden.

I think greenlanes has clearly explained that this is just the beginning of a detailed process where everyone can put their point of view.
Time for some calm reflection, and putting politics aside for the benefit of future generations.
I can't see any harm to Silsden in looking at making better use of the Town Hall.
