This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

I fully expect abuse for this post from the usual halfwits on here but here goes;
Who and why were the walls on the far side of the beck dug out? this happened at the beginning of the summer and then seems to have been forgotten about and the only this created is an eyesore and a dangerous place where children go to feed the ducks, all it takes is one to fall in and whoever decided to dig it out will be liable. In addition with winter approaching I would guarantee that when the beck rises due to heavy rain these walls will be washed away.
If there was no intention of continuing the work why was it even started,

this post has been edited 1 time(s)

this is an ongoing project from the environment group and silsden town council
we have been waiting for approval from the environment agency who have been draging their heels

Approval has now been granted
In the next few weeks a flood gate will be constructed and installed then the beds are going to be extended to aid flood prevetion
(incorparating the original stone cobbles still in situe)
the beds will then be refilled and replanted

In the nostalgia section(50 years ago) of last weeks Craven Herald Silsden Urban District Council were slammed for not protecting St John St from flooding.
At last it seems to be happening.

Has it occured to those people involved in the flood defence work by the ford at the top of St.John's Street that in extreme flood situations the beck overflows by the ford on the Kirkgate side too. Is this to be rectified? Also, the retaining wall below the ford on the St.John;s Street side has water pouring through it in extreme flood situations & will at least need repointing. As a St.John's Street resident i have serious concerns with this flood defence work & consider that this will result in higher levels of flood water since it will no longer be able to escape at the ford & this will consequently bring an increased risk of flooding to properties further down St.John's Street on the beckside. At present these property's retaining walls are just about able to cope or are breached in extreme flooding. It is my opinion that St.John's Street residents should have been consulted.

My last comment may well have been missed because the it would appear the site went down for the best part of 24 hours. I had hoped to get a response from the environment group or others interested in this issue.

The Environment agency have been consulted on this and have done projections as to what might happen
They have also done a site visit and are happy with what the Environment group/Town Council are doing

This has also been debated in Silsden Town Council for over a year and has been in the keighley news and craven herald numerous times

On the walls at st johns street the beds are to be extended to help against flooding/seepage through the walls
