is it true that the cops can fine you 50pound if you have snow on top of your car roof when you are driving on a public road?

Possibly. Take a look at www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/news/breakdown-update-snow-and-ice-late-november-2010.html which says "You could be fined and receive three penalty points if the police consider your car a danger to other road users" - so that could apply in any situation. Think the messages recently about police checking for this especially are an urban myth. I'm sure they have all on trying to help people out. Well, you would hope so... Maybe if you caused an accident as a result it would be a different matter ? Hope this helps.

Why would it be surprise?

If you were following a car with a loaded roof-rack along a road and stuff starting falling off and hitting your car, you'd be annoyed.

Lumps of snow and ice blowing back off the car in-front are annoying/dangerous at speed. And what happens when you brake . . . all the snow slides down over the screen once there is a bit of heat in the car to melt it free. And doesn't snow blowing off the bonnet annoy you?

I'm surprised by those who don't clear it - or the snow over their lights, grille, heater inlet grilles on the bonnet etc. Never mind the ones who only clear bits of windscreen, or some of a sidewindow, leaving all the others covered. Amzing sight the other morning - a small car based van with 6" of snow on it, with a windscreen wiper sweep shaped hole, 6" deep, in the covering all over - side windows, bonnet, lights . .

Mind you, I saw a plod car with a nice streamlined roof shape the other morning - snow up to the blue lights and back down the rear . . . so he/she might have struggled in fining someon . . . wink :)

Was told it was illegal to drive with snow on the car roof, let him off with a talking to.

well i guess my question as been answered, thank you for the replies, directing at bri now,you say about luggage on roofracks being annoying n all, surely you wouldnt be that far upto the vehicles rear end for the luggage to fall onto your car, especially knowing that the roofrack is full in the first place

Nice soft brush does the job, I use the brush I use to was my car with (the kind that sprays water as well).
For bigger vehicles just as easy, soft brissle brush with a long handle!
10 min job, no snow on your windscreen or the guy behind you.

I understand the hassle of having to get ready 15 minutes earlier to clear and heat the car and then another 15 minutes on top of that to account for traffic disruptions but it is something that needs to be done!

It is an annoyance when it sprays off on the dual carrigeway from a certain german courier company van as they race past. But when it's nice slabs of ice flying off, it's more than just an annoyance to other drivers!

What is 10 minutes worth to you?

along same theme, it's actually more likely to happen if you set off without fully demisting or defrosting your windscreen (inside and/or out). if you cant see other cars or pedestrians, that could get you into trouble. take care, take that 5 mins....
