There was a preservation order on this beautiful old tree. It will have been there for at least 200 years.
Already the leaves are dying off. What has happened is a crime, both legally and morally. If anyone knows who has poisoned the tree, they should get in touch with environmental health at Bradford, who are investigating.

On conviction of contravening tree preservation order, penalty can be fine up to £20000, imprisonment, or both.
Does the culprit know this? Is it worth it?
Poison can be traced.

perhaps the local press should be informed and maybe a small reward offered for any info leading to a conviction?

Posted on behalf of Simon Keenan, Arboricultural Officer, Bradford Council.

Dear Sir,

I am the tree officer for Bradford Council and I am currently dealing with an enforcement case where a 175 year old protected oak tree to the side of 1 Woodside Road has been poisoned. Five large holes have recently been drilled into the tree and chemicals poured in. It remains to be seen whether the poisoning will kill the entire tree. The tree is so important to the area that a number of local residents have expressed strong concerns about what has happened and there seems to be a general opinion (unsubstantiated) on who did the poisoning. Unfortunately as yet we do not have any witnesses and I was wondering therefore whether would be able to assist the Council in its investigations by perhaps doing a piece on the subject and appealing for witnesses? Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Kind regards

Simon Keenan

I agree. I hope that remedial action can be taken before it's too late. For someone to drill 5 holes into a tree, they have made a concerted effort. Given the location, someone must have seen or heard something!

maybe the people who live directly next to it? seems like an extremely selfish act of vandalism, whoever it was & hopefully they will be found & prosecuted

I find this act of vandalism deeply upsetting. I lived on Woodside Road from the age of 4 to 19 and still visit my parents weekly, passing the tree. The Oak Tree was a big part of my childhood, it was a place to meet my friends, a place to race to and of course collect Acorns & leaves. I hope they find who did this and they are punished accordingly.

I noticed this as I drove down Woodside Rd this morning. It's a disgrace. Apart from the people living near it, whose view it probably spoils, why on earth would anyone take the trouble of drilling holes in and pouring poison in. I do hope it can be saved.

It looks as though around a 1/3rd - 1/2 is suffering die back, hopefully the remaining healthy part will be o.k. if not a little strange looking. What was the reasoning behind this act of vandalism? Don't get it at all, there is sufficient room to pass for the allotment holders. Also it didn't appear to be having structural problems, so that can't be the reason.

The reason is probably the pollen and other stuff that trees deposit on cars below...but when people buy a house near a tree, they should expect this. In any case it's lovely living near trees, as long as they are healthy and safe. We can only speculate on the motivation of the culprits, but at least it is clearly malicious, holes and poison don't appear by magic.

We live next to the tree on Cobbydale Court and have flushed out the holes with a power hosepipe on 4 occasions so far since the officer removed the bungs.
A few answers to some of the questions posed above.
We have both lived within a couple hundred yards from the tree all our lives and like many above have lots of happy memories.
When we moved in we organised the council parks department to come and prune it to remove dangerous branches. The residents of the Court are truly gutted about the mindless actions of a brainless individual .
Who, Will we ever find out?
Why, maybe if we found out whom we may solve the second question.
When, obviously to drill 5 holes with a brace and bit, 3/4-inch diameter and around 15 inch long had to be done at night by street light lighting. The perpetrator also had the exact sized bungs to seal the holes, so a premeditated offence. So, 5 holes drilled in wet oak as described above would need a strong and powerful operator, so rules a lot of people out.
Broken Branches, fortunately these were done by the digger used by the gas workers last week, and not through the poisoning.
It would be great to catch the person responsible, who could face a custodial sentence and up to a £20,000 fine, but perhaps he alone will only ever know the truth.

my electric drill powerful enough to drill those holes would have been quite noisey and very slow - not exactly practical for a middle of night raid

The residue from the hole drilling was on the floor in a spiral not saw dust. Done by a brace and bit according to the tree specialist.

All this info is very interesting, and should be pointing towards someone as a possible suspect. There must have been a specialised poison which could be traced?
People other than the culprit must be aware who it is... I reckon it is worth a Police investigation in view of the likely sentence. A good detective could probably sort this one out.
I know the Police are busy, but it would be a good community effort if they could solve it. And it would send out a clear message for others who might think about doing the same thing.
Can the Council not push for some action?

sadly "specialised" poison isn't needed - you can buy tree poison at most garden centres and failing that, a quick google search shows that copper is poison to trees - i assume they used a copper compound - the daft thing is, that it would have been easier and less obvious to lift the bark in a few places and drive in some copper nails, so in fact their attempts were a little amateurish

Inquiry launched by Bradford Council after attack on protected oak tree - Craven Herald

www.cravenherald.co.uk/news/9051029.Landmark_Silsden_oak_tree_is_poisoned/

..... “It remains to be seen whether the poisoning will kill the entire tree,” said Council arboricultural officer Simon Keenan.

“The tree is so important to the area that a number of residents have expressed strong concerns about what has happened. Unfortunately as yet we do not have any witnesses.”

District and Silsden town councillor Adrian Naylor supported the pleas for information.

“In this day and age this kind of act is totally unacceptable and you would think that someone drilling five large holes into the tree would draw attention,” he said.

“If the tree does die I will do whatever I can to get it replaced.”

Witnesses should contact Mr Keenan on (01274) 434297 or e-mail simon.keenan@bradford.gov.uk

I have a young Oak tree growing in my garden (I've had since it was an acorn) which is going to need to come out soon before it gets too big - it's about 10' tall I estimate now. Clr Naylor is welcome to it if a replacement is needed.

Is it maybe time to offer a reward for info leading to the catching of this person? Someone must know who they are.
Say £1000 from council funds?
Might get a result in these hard times.

perhaps as I suggested in an earlier post the press could be contacted with an offer of a reward leading to a conviction, and people could donate via the press.Surely if a conviction was made this would deter others, and this would also show the strength of feeling amongst residents.

Time for a slight reality check.
It's a tree. A nice tree. An old tree. But still only a tree.

A grand, or your fifty quid, would be better spent with Age Concern, or a childrens charity, or even the RSPCA.

Bricol....in other words, do nothing...it always ends up like that. It's unfair to use the old "better to give to charity" saying...that's a copout for doing nothing. Most people give to charity anyway, especially those who can least afford to give.
You are right "it's only a tree", but there's a principle at stake here, and someone is putting 2 fingers up to the local community. They should not get away with it.Someone knows who it is.
