While I was on my holidays in the Scottish Highlands last week, I noticed that all the schools in the small villages and towns had 20mph signs that flashed with orange lights when the kids were going and coming from school.

That meant that the 30 or 40mph speed limit was reduced to 20mph at school times.

What does anyone think of this for Silsden schools?

Was the 20mph just by the schools or all over the town

Just in the area of the school.

So that say in Silsden they'd be at either end of Elliott Street for example.

Don't think they'd work all over town, sadly.

just been up to Carlisle to collect relatives for a visit to Silsden, they have loads of 20mph limits up there in residential areas, and they seem to slow things down.

There are lots of 20mph areas around here! Just none of them are in Silsden, despite them being asked for several times by the Town Council.
Go to Addingham, and Steeton, they have them.
I believe we should also have them, and while we are at it why not have speed cameras covering all the areas as well, then the bad drivers can pay for the work that has been undertaken to stop them driving like idiots.

I agree "grandad" but what I was suggesting was part time 20mph zones as they have in Scotland.

They have zones around schools with flashing lights that reduce the speed at school times. This idea resolves some of the issues on Elliott Street etc with emergency vehicles.

Bradford should get their hands in their pockets and protect the kids of Silsden!

Controversial as this may sound: Why do children need to be taken to and collected from school by car. Everywhere in Silsden is within walking distance, My daughter had the choice of coming home in either her Shoes or her Wellies.

That has NOTHING at all to do with the thread "robin"! Who mentioned kids going to school in cars?

Cars PASS down Elliott Street while kids are going to school, that would be the point of the the 20mph!

But Alan if you don't live on Hothfield Street then there is no reason for cars to travel along Hothfield Street. If more children walked to school then there would not be as much congestion around our schools. There are lots of other places where a flashing sign (an expensive resource) could be put to better use.

I agree the speed limit by our schools should be 20mph but this could be achieved by the cheap method of 20mph signage pained on the road and zoning + perhaps the threat of a mobile speed camera (which I should hope would only be used during school time). On Elliot Street perhaps there should be a give way chicane, but there I go again the road has just been updated by Bradford so there goes any improvements for the next 10 years.

I'm not getting in to the debate about kids going to school in cars. The question was primarily about Elliott Street.

If we don't want to answer the question without a great debate about the ethics of kids going to school in cars I'll do no more with it.

It was a simple idea, that we MAY get the funding for if we make the effort. You are either for the idea or not! We're not going to get chicanes, mobile speed cameras, or inflatable traffic wardens!

If you want to start another debate open another thread.

I think Alan is right on this....a simple idea which could make things safer for the children and mothers/fathers. Worth costing it out, and see where it could go from there. Let's keep it simple, we may get a result!

The idea of a 20mph limit on Elliott Street is back in the news again.

This is something Aireview (or at least the parents) are trying to do. Only last week I signed a form given to me by the school to support a 20mph speed limit up Elliott Street. Perhaps if people contact the school we could get more signatures.

In Oman they have a simple system to reduce speed outside schools. Road humps that you have to slow down for because they are big. Anything over 10 mph and one was liable to take off.

Anyhow, which school in Silsden is it possible to drive by faster than 20 mph. The Elliot street car park reduces the speed of everyone except a loony and anyone going over 20 outside Hothfield will next hit a wall.

I think it's agreat idea to have flasking lights Alan, in other words a temporary 20mph limit along Elliot Street.

It would have to be temporary because of the need for emergency vehicles (especially fire engines) to not be held up by other vehicles moving at 20mph.

But is the legislation in place in England for "flashing lights" to indicate a mandatory 20mph speed limit?

(shows how long ago I looked at a "highway code" booklet!)

Personally I think it should be a permanent 20mph on both Elliott Street and Hothfield Street, with flashing lights to remind drivers at school times.

As for emergency vehicles they manage in other parts of the district. BUT if it's a school opening or closing time should they be doing over 20mph? Isn't a childs life more important?

I'll leave that one to debate happy :)

Why just have the 20MPH limit and signs? It is only the lunatic drivers that are a problem (Leaving aside the fire persons going to the station) who drive around above the speed limit, lets get the whole town fitted with speed cameras and make lots of money out of them, plus if they get caught often enough they will loose their licences
