This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Anyone see it last night on ITV?

As a relative newcomer (left the south in 1978), can I ask how long Keighley has been in the Dales?

wink :)

Keighley is in the dales? Thought Skipton was "gateway to the dales". I can tell you what Keighley is the gateway to but it will be inappropriate for this forum!

Keighley is in Yorkshire.
Dales refers to the hill country.
Keighley has hills so must be in the Yorshire Dales.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park defines and adminastrative area not a geological one.

At least Keighley is in Airedale which is partly in the Yorkshire dales (starts at Malham)

I've never heard of Barnsleydale - sounds like a dodgy cheese laugh :D

Wikipedia

A dale is a valley. The word dale comes from Old English dael and is related to Old Norse dalr.

So the Yorkshire dales means the Yorkshire Valleys. So all those parts of Yorkshire with valleys are Yorkshire Dales. So if Barnsley is in a valley in Yorkshire then it is a Yorkshire dale!

Craven is generally known as being part of the Yorkshire Dales so given according to the Doomsday Book, Silsden is the most important village in Craven, we can assume Silsden is in The Yorkshire Dales.

Both Keighley and Bingley were known as Airedale. But as for being part of THE DALES, who knows.
