I would not have thought we needed one as there is one in keighley and one opening at snaygill this year.I think the site is wrong also, it would be better on the other side of the road where riverside mills was, more chance of doing something with the traffic there maybe

Any competition to the Co-op`s prices has to be a big plus to the residents of Silsden and the fact that Aldi is the No. 1 up and coming supermarket, why not????

A supermarket keen to please and more new jobs, the sooner the better for me and i`m sure many others.

As an Aldi shopper its good news but fear that they have been given the nod about the number of new house that will be built in Silsden. I can not think of anywhere that has 3 Aldi's so close to each other.

don't know why they would need any inside info about new houses to decide to build in Silsden, plenty of potential customers already especially when the only competition is the co-op.

EDIT. I do however think it's a shame to loose Habasit, we need more people making more things in this country not less.

Is this a speculative application from a developer hoping to sell the idea to Aldi or Lidl or is it an application from Aldi, or Lidl?

The planning application seems to be from a developer and while the pictures show an Aldi the text mentions Lidl.

Interesting but would not bet my shirt on it.

Can anyone give a good case as to why anyone should build a supermarket on that plot?

It is on the edge of town and is only accessible by car. A Nice walk down, but then up hill back for virtually every local customer.

The first rule one learns about competition is to build your shop next door to your competitor. Build it the other side of town and you might get half. Build it next door and you might get the lot. ASDA and ALDI in Keighley are as near as they can get to Sainsburys who are as near as they can get to Morrisons. Skipton is the same.

Unless Lidl or Aldi know something about housing development in that part of Silsden that we do not and have given the positive nod to the developers then I just wonder why they, the developers are bothering. Alternatively Aldi/Lidl have data on how people will change there shopping patterns from Steeton, Crosshills and Silsden and that a shop there is viable.

As for supporting local firms, I assume everyone will be in a new locally made Snugpack Jacket this winter as they are again being made in Silsden. Similarly everyone will be driving UK made Toyota Auri and Avensi made in the UK and sold by local Toyota dealer.

I do my bit and the lambs one sees scampering around the field in spring certain taste OK. so do the chickens and beef.

Old Miner, you do talk a load of rubbish at times.

The competition is the Co-Op and this is a commuter town, so unless you work in the Ilkley direction you will drive past it every day. If there is a large car park it will be easy to stop and the prices will mean you can do a weekly shop, unlike the Co-Op which is so expensive for anything but a convenience shop.

It will be convenient for the residents of Steeton and all those commuters that like to use Silsden as a short cut on the way to somewhere else.

No one has actually answered the question as to Why Aldi or Lidl might wish to build in the proverbial middle of nowhere in terms of nearby customers.

As someone who walks to the Co-Operative via other local shops why I should I walk to Lidl/Aldi passing ????

As to those who suggest I do no know what I am talking about I only have one thing to say:

Read up on very basic economics.'wink ;)');

Old Miner, I think you will find it will be classed as an out of town supermarket as well as a convenience store, due to its late opening.

I don`t think anyone would walk to the Coop to do a weekly shop, as they would not walk to the new supermarket for a weekly shop so the hill would not come into play.

Shoppers would drive to the nations fastest growing supermarket on their doorstep for a great choice and cheaper prices than the Coop, i think it is economic sense.

I know people like to complain about the high prices at the Co-op but isn't it handy when we get a winter like last year - not too many complaints about the price of milk and bread then.

The Co-Operative is a UK operation with its own farms and food processing facilities. Profits stay in the Uk.

Aldi and Lidl are German so all profits go to Germany!

It is nice to know that there are plenty of pro-europeans in Silsden though.

Flying pigs are probably Danish.

Having looked at the plans and objections, I think on balance it could benefit Silsden people, especially if there is some 106 money coming to the Town, but also the people living opposite the entrance have a point that they can only park their cars on Keighley Rd, maybe the supermarket owners could allow them the park in their carpark? This would ensure the parked cars are not an obstruction when the delivery artic comes.
There are plenty of buses passing by the site so getting there shouldn't be to big a problem.

Seems a good idea as long as times as restricted for both opening and wagon deliveries!
Don't forget the residents at the top of Belton Road who may have to overlook this supermarket (triple glazing of windows and gasmasks already on order!)
Think the land has been sold to the Developer and not Aldi, so possibly received over-the-odds price!
Could be good for Silsden in long term

With ref to the Skipton Aldi ,the entrance and exit has just been built to the store ,also a new traffic island has been built opposite which appears that if you come out of the exit you cant turn right you will have to go on to the mini roundabout at the entrance to the snaygill ind estate I cant see aldi wagons turning round on that mini roundabout so will customers turn left out of aldi then turn right into hotel carpark just to get back on to the Keighley road I wonder

Why isn't the planning application from Aldi?
If they are so keen why o through developers?

I have my doubts - but happy to be proved wrong - I quite like Aldi for some of the special offers - and wine is not too bad either.

I am cautiously optimistic for a supermarket for Silsden. However, I do not like the idea of it being built on open green spaces. There are acres of derelict land, that do nothing for the image of Silsden just across the road at Riverside Mills. This would not mean the removal or relocation of a mature Lime tree, with a TPO, the destruction of habitat/flight lines for bat species and the alteration of water courses.

There should be other ways for Habassit Rossi to finance the regeneration of their business?

It is an absolute no brainer, that any new retail outlet is going to run their business as many hours as possible, with all the delivery agents running as and when necessary. Yes, this means bread and paper deliveries at 0400 am, chilled and frozen deliveries anywhere between 0500 and 0900!

In order for Habassit Rossi to honour their financial commitments, they too are going to need to increase their operational hours. They too will need to work 7 days a week. It surprises me that they aren't applying to operate 24/7.

This is all a bit negative Gamekeeper for a piece of land which can flood. It is industrial land and an Aldi must be a better option than a council recycling plant (remember the opposition to that idea).

As far as I can see from the plans the new building will be on the higher ground, but I wouldn't recommend taking your car shopping if it looks like a thunderstorm is imminent.

As far as Habisit is concerned, without a sympathetic development on the land they would have to move which would result in the loss of 80 Habisit jobs + 20 new Aldi jobs, and what would get in place of Habisit?

Delivery hours and working hours can all be sorted out with planning and the wishes of the local people, I haven't seen many objections against the proposal so they must be doing something right.

Totally agree with you Fred, there are so many positives on this, and very few negatives. Habasit and Aldi are good employers, we need food competition in Silsden to get the Co-op back into better deals for local people, and it all makes sense.
As far as previous comments about profits going back to Germany from Aldi, I suppose that the thousands of workers at Toyota, Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover would have something to say about being happy working for foreign owners!
We need foreign investment for jobs, even the Chinese are going to build our next nuclear power station.
I just hope Aldi happens here in Silsden happy :)

Just out of curiosity, how many of the 80 Habasit employees live in Silsden ?

Would we lose 80 jobs or 80 daily commuters if it were to relocate away from Silsden ?
