Winter tyres - be prepared and then you won't struggle, won't get stuck and block the road, and won't crash . . . into that parked car, or the kid on the sledge that just shot out in-front of you, or indeed the little old lady walking on the pavement you just slid up onto because you went out unsuitably equipped for the conditions.

And that applies to all you "proper" 4WD drivers on the wrong / worn out tyres.

@Bricol, won't my slicks do?
Seriously, though, do you have a set of winter tyres just for this pathetic amount of snow?
I think last year was the first time it we had snow for more than two days (in the last 5 years at least)!

I think there is a fairly valid point here, if you have a drive where you can park and get back out then it would be a good idea to use it to avoid all the hassle of insurance, repairs etc, if someone skids in the snow and bumps your car. Having said that I need to follow my own advice wink :)

Yep - winter tyres. And have done every winter for the last 14yrs. Worth it for the one time that they allow me to stop to miss some kid, some other car on normal tyres, and simply allowing me to go about my normal business with no hassle, no worries and no trouble. Plus avoiding any costs and trouble with not damaging the car. Put winters on the G/Fs car for the first time this year - so now I don't have to take her places, and I don't have to worry so much when she's out.

If you've never driven on winter tyres, you won't appreciate the difference, not only in snow, but generally lower temps at this time of year. But in snow, the difference is laugh out loud amazing - simply drive around just about everything else out there with a light car - less momentum to stop, less inertia to get going than 2 tonnes of Land Rover. Funniest thing is to overtake those nice lads in the Police cars . . . they do give you some strange looks as they slip slide along . . . and you don't.

Used to use Colway remould winter tyres - 19 quid each and were amazing. Use for two winters and flog on. Used Kingpin Alpe winter remoulds the last two and again were fantastic. This winter is the first on "proper" winters - Nokian WR2s. Remind me in the spring to tell you how they were.

Problem is modern car all-year tyres are now wide, low profile and have grooves around the tyre - 70s/80s tyres were narrower with more cross-ways grooves, so weren't so crap as todays tyres in a tiny bit of snow. Unless you are driving something sillily lowered so the front acts as a plough, there is nothing wrong with the average car in snow - just the four tiny contact patches with the ground.

Not that I'm a tyre bore wink :)

Lived and worked in areas of the world where they get proper snow, and either people swop to winter tyres to carry on with life, or have to by law - so I was amused by last winter, and so far, this winter, especially the TV coverage. In the US I used to get up to another foot of snow on the car most mornings for a couple of months - car used to freeze to the ground overnight. If you didn't kick the snow out of the wheelarches, it froze and you couldn't turn the steering wheel in the morning - I learnt that lesson quick!

Chains and snowsocks are good for getting you un-stuck, but winter tyres just let you carry on at sensible speed - although you do need to remember that while they are better on ice than normal tyres, compared to studded tyres they are useless. But they do give you more chance to stop or steer when you do come across ice as the tread and compound work so much better in the cold.

Missed the boat now though - all the tyre places seem to have simply doubled their prices for winter tyres since it snowed. So remember next autgust time - buy some old wheels from the breakers and get some winter tyres. Store them in the cool and dark and fit them late October - and practise your smug look . ..

i'm with you all the way bricol. bought some cheap wheels on ebay earlier in the year, fitted winter tyres to them last month once i'd got my money's worth out of the tyres that were on them & i'm now happily driving my lightweight RWD MX-5 on roads that it wouldn't even look at last year in the same conditions.

when your commute is 25 miles to Leeds you have to know you're going to be able to get there & back. winter tyres & a set of autosox in the boot (plus a small tin of road grit) & i know i'm not going to get stuck

Must admit I chickened out of the small RWD sportscar and I'm now in the tin-top.

But it's stunning how good the right tyres are wink :) And you are allowed to admit it - it can be fun sometimes just to push the rear end out in controlled conditions wink :) And know it'll come back as the tyres have some grip that you chose to overcome.

Bloke at work amuses me - as soon as it snows he commutes to work on a push-bike! Now if ever there were conditions to want to be sat in a reinforced steel box for when someone else loses it on a slippery road . . .

Well, G/F home on the winter tyres - safe and sound, no worries, no hassle, no sliping and a sliding. And no worries for me wondering wink :)

I've not yet seen a police car with winter tyres - but quite few Volvo estates with front wheels spinning nicely. I think they do carry snow sock or chains for when they really get stuck though.

When working in the US, I was amused to find a local cop doing the same as me one evening - laking about in an empty mall car park, 12" deep in dry powder snow. You get fantastic, high rooster tails of powder out the sides of the car . . tiny minds and all that wink :) Having some fun and learning a tiny bit of car control.

had to nip to skipton earlier & was trying some of that in the town hall car park - finding the limits of grip *ahem* wink ;)

fun to see idiots trying to get into parking positions by spinning the front wheels at 8000rpm while creeping forwards/sideways

Yeah, I was lead to believe you ease off if your wheels start to spin, starting off in a higher gear helps too (2nd instead of 1st).

It amuzed me to see one peron in a volvo estate spinning out, instead of gradually increasing acceleration they seemed to just floor it.
This did not work and it took a while for them to figure out a gradual increase would stop them from spinning out, this was after they reversed down the road several times though to try and take a slowish run up at the icey patch!

Back to the subject....

It is stupid to park across the bottom of a hill in these conditions. You may have the best tyres for the condition (and even a 4 x 4)... and lets face we are " all fantastic drivers in snow".... but when you are on solid ice and want to stop at the bottom of the hill, and can't, what choice do you have but to slide across the road at the bottom of the hill.

If a car is parked across the bottom of the hill then that's 5 foot of less sliding distance and perhaps an insurance claim.

Don't park across the bottom of a hill in these conditions - YOU know it makes sense! happy :)happy :)

So long as the cars were/ are parked "legally" I take it if someone were to hit one of them it would be the drivers fault for hitting the car. Unfortunetly just because a car is parked legally doesn't mean it is sensible to park there!

Ha we are all "awesome drivers" in the snow and ice!
Even the best drivers in the most capable cars (Land Rover Defender) can be caught out so I think I will just be keeping the driving to a minimum. How long can it last?

Touche. BBC weather's predictions seem to have been wrong on a few occasions and the outlook for the rest of the week is forever changing.
I wonder if last year was the beginning of a trend and this is just the beginning of this years bad weather!

4WD dowsn't help at all in stopping - what new 4WD owners forget is that there are still only 4 wheels on the ground doing the braking. And "proper" 4WDs have the added disadvantage of excessive weight (and not just the owners wink :) )

However, if you are aware a hill is sheet ice, then why attempt it? But I still agree, parking at the bottom of it is daft.

Anyone see the local TV news? Film of nice RAC man in 2WD recovery vehicle (it was a 4WD one, but either diff locks not in, or LSDs not fitted, so two wheels at opposite corners were spinning) towing some old bloke backwards out of the snow . . . which was when old bloke decided to help by applying 8000rpm . . . forwards wink :)

Just came home over the top - fantastic - white all over, no-one else around (once past the stuck nice lady in East Morton who finally refused a tow from me) and great fun - if like that sort of thing.

But if I get behind some more people tomorrow doing 20mph overtaking people doing 19.9999mph 'cos it's snowy on the bypass, I'm gonna . . . . ggrrrrrr. . . .

Is the bypass covered in snow?
I didn't trust it the other day, it was clearish but a few ice patches at the side so I dropped down to 50 - 60mph.

I try not to park on the road when it's like this, I expect someone to slide into it!

On occasion, especially outer lane early on a morning.

Just for a laugh for typical driving standards -

www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MPRmOUxRMY&feature=related

It had been raining and froze. Several other looked at it and decided it was too slippery.

Car ended up in wall around the corner, missing the idiot who at one point was "driving" it . . .
