It is not my intention to worry people but my wife was in Addingham this morning and a friend told her that someone in Addingham was infected with the virus. I do hope they are wrong.

Lots of people, I would even say most people, will recover eventually from Coronavirus after between 2 to 6 weeks.

But some people, people with underlying health conditions or immune system problems for example, will not recover. So far the mortality rate seems to be significantly higher (I've seen figures from 5 to 10 times more) than seasonal flu in the groups I mentioned above.

FOR PATIENT SAFETY WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT, any patient wishing to make an appt must PHONE the surgery and a clinician will call you back. This is to minimise the risk to patients and staff. If you are worried about coronavirus, please visit 111.nhs.uk/covid-19 or call NHS 111. Silsden Practice

Not able to enter the surgery as they have built a barrier with chairs, you have to call across the waiting room to the person on the desk to let them know what you want. The box for repeat prescriptions is on a chair at the door.

Panic buying still in full throe. Had to call in Sainsburys this morning to collect order. Folk with trolleys piled high. One vehicle on car park that was very noticeable was then in Asda car park when we called to fill up, obviously doing the rounds. Aldi had someone waiting at 7.40am, then car park heaving when we passed at 9.45.
What is happening is dreadful but lets play fair folk, ditch the ME ME ME syndrome.

I've heard that some towns and neighbourhoods are compiling lists of volunteers, to help with tasks like getting essential supplies to people who are self-isolating - is there one for Silsden as yet?

Re. panic buying

It just doesn't seem to get through to the powers-that-be that if they say "Don't do xyz", the "Don't" gets filtered out. Maybe what would be better would be to tell people to lay in the minimum that they need to get through a 14-day period of self-isolation (focusing on things which have a long enough life to prevent waste,) then just go back to buying what they need from day to day. (Trouble is that the changed view means that people might have to self-isolate for longer than 14 days.)

A statement from the Medical Centre

GP surgeries in Keighley, South Craven and Skipton today updated their advice to patients.

The advice about changes due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) only applies to surgeries and medical centres in the Modality Practices. Group

Modality warned patients not to go to their surgery in person unless requested by a member of staff.

Modality Practices are the Cross Hills Group Practice, Silsden Group Practice, Fisher Medical Centre in Skipton, Oakworth Medical Practice, Haworth Medical Practice, and the Holycroft Surgery, Farfield Group Practice and Kilmeny Group Medical Practice in Keighley.

Bill Graham, Community and Innovation Lead at Modality, said: "We will continue to update advice to our patients in line with national guidance. Please follow the advice as we seek to minimize risks to patients and staff."

The Modality statement reads:

Please could we now ask that you DO NOT come to the surgery in person unless requested by a member of staff.

If you need to contact us please do so via telephone or using our online services.

We understand that this will make the phone lines busier during these times so if possible please use Econsult which can be found on our website.

Econsult can be used for admin requests or help with new or existing conditions, a clinician will get back to you via email or telephone. If you need to be seen the clinician will inform you of this.

All pre-booked appointments will now be done via telephone, please ensure your contact details are up to date and correct. Please DO NOT attend the surgery for your appointment unless you have been asked to by a member of staff.

For prescriptions, please ensure you have nominated a pharmacy, if you have not and have regular prescriptions that you collect from the surgery please go to the pharmacy of your choosing and speak to them to set them up as your nominated pharmacy.

To request your prescription, this can be done using online services, if you have not got access to our online services through our website please download the NHS app prescription request can be done via these. Please note it might take a few minutes to register but once completed it is very simple to use.

You can also request via Econsults.

The updated advice regarding self-isolation:

* If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started.

* if you live with others and you or one of them have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill

If you have coronavirus symptoms:

* do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital

* you do not need to contact 111 to tell them you’re staying at home

* testing for coronavirus is not needed if you’re staying at home

* if you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, or your condition gets worse, or your symptoms do not get better after 7 days, then use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service. If you do not have internet access, call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999 ? See our self-isolation guidemodalitypartnership.nhs.uk/images/Selfisolation_Advice_17.03.2020.JPG

Strict new curbs on life in the UK to tackle the spread of coronavirus have been announced by the prime minister.

From this evening people must stay at home except for shopping for basic necessities, daily exercise, any medical need and travelling to and from essential work.

Shops selling non-essential goods are being told to shut and gatherings in public of more than two people who do not live together are to be prohibited.

The UK death toll has reached 335.

If people do not follow the rules police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings, Boris Johnson said in a televised statement from Downing Street.

A message from Bradford Council

Please use our parks and green spaces responsibly during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

Play areas, play grounds and multi-use games areas across the whole of the district are closed, but some people are not getting the message.

We are hearing of people ignoring the signs and tape put in place and using play equipment, multi-use games areas and congregating in parks.

And we're also getting reports of people driving to beauty spots such as the Cow and Calf Rocks for picnics and to meet up with friends in groups.

The message is clear - avoid all unnecessary journeys and Stay At Home. If people don’t have a garden or access to outside space they should go as far as nearest park or greenspace, not venture further afield.

Local parks should only be used for the sole purpose of daily exercise and not to meet mates, use equipment or play sports.

People who live in the same house may go out together but should keep their distance from others. Groups of more than two people from different households meeting up are dangerous and not allowed.

Statement from Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Executive Member for Healthy People and Places:

“I cannot stress this strongly enough – this is a national emergency and not a national holiday. This is a national emergency and not a national holiday. Now is not the time to go to the park to meet up with your mates, it is also not the time to take up jogging, go hill walking or go on excessive dog walks. This is the time to avoid all non-essential travel, keep contact to a minimum and Stay At Home.

“People need to get real and treat this seriously – workplaces and education setting are not closed to give people the opportunity to meet with their friends and stroll in the park.

“Anyone you come in to contact with could have coronavirus, any surface you touch could have coronavirus, so meeting up with people and using the play equipment in parks is extremely irresponsible.

“People who are doing this, are not only risking their health, but the health of everyone they come in to contact with, including members of their family especially elderly grandparents, great grandparents and people who are already not well. Gates are locked, signs are up and areas are taped off for a reason.

“Youth Workers have also been giving clear messages that young people should Stay At Home and act responsibly to help keep them and their loved ones safe. This doesn’t mean all hang out at one person’s house. It means go to your own home and stay there.

“There are loads of great ways that people can use technology to keep in touch and people should use these.”
