This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

I see form the telegraph and argus that habisat want to demolish their building and put a supermarket on the site and rebuild their premises on the green field site that was chosen by bradford as a possible site for waste treatment!
Not sure whether this is a good idea or not, thinking of access to and from the site if a supermarket is built there

hmmm.... I don't think this is a good idea. You can say goodbye to the independant shops in Kirkgate and Briggate. sad :(

You could aways get a boat to go shopping I suppose.

would you rather have a waste disposal site or a supermarket?
I suppose that is what this boils down to, because if people protest to both, Habasit could well sell, move on and leave silsden with both a supermarket AND a waste disposal site.sad :(

Because of the flooding it's not suitable for either.

For all of you that want another supermarket please think it through before you support the idea. With two supermarkets there will be competition between them and the town centre shops will be the losers. So the town centre shops will go bust and there will be empty shops, more takeaways and charity shops.

There used to be much more variety of shopping before the Co-Op expanded.

Be careful what you wish for...

Its Lidl then!!!.The Hayle Lidl floods often and when you enter the shop you are invited to read the flood evacuation plan so they have a history of these projects.

Local youths and members of the travelling community are well on their way to demolishing Riverside works so wouldnt the best option be to redevelop that site as Habasit/supermarket and then sell the current Habasit factory?

Anything that brings 100 new jobs to Silsden, and safeguards 80 existing ones, must be well worth it. Also some competition for the Co-op will be good. Local shops will still survive if they provide good value and service. It is also likely that Silsden will have more houses when the recession eases, all good stuff! happy :)

What company in their right mind is going to build a supermarket down there. All the traffic problems the waste site might cause would be ten times worse. The hassle of getting from over the canal, where the majority of people live, down there really makes it a non starter. Wishful thinking on the developers part.
Of course, if they cannot get an industrial user for the site then they might try for houses, more money to be made in land for houses!

@carliol

The local shops will not survive another supermarket... the way things are already with people not coming into the town...

and the local shops already provide a good quality service and their prices are already for most part lower than the co-op.....

be careful what you wish for because it doesnt just mean more jobs, it means more traffic, more congestion, more lorries and more empty shops.

the supermarkets rarely leave revenue in the local economy, yes they provide jobs but the ammount they take out is alot higher. local shops circulate money in the local economy around three to four times more.
