what does anyone think about this, it does not seem to have had much publicity and also not much information given regarding who the candidates are and why they think they can do the job.Do we really need a commisioner bearing in mind the salary will be between £60000 and £100000 a year

Candidates have up to 19 October to declare, but these are standing in West Yorkshire so far

I don't understand all about it, like many others I suspect, and I'm not sure many will vote anyway? happy :)

The election for the West Yorkshire Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) will take place on Thursday November 15th whether we think it's a good idea or not. However low the turn out is one of the candidates will be elected. There are 3 at the moment (see the link above) but might be more before nominations close tomorrow.
PCCs will take over the current role of Police Authorities and be accountable to voters for the setting and management of budgets and for policing priorities and strategy. This election is not setting the world on fire with voting enthusiasm but as we've got to have a commissioner - let's make sure we get the right one!
Personally I'm sorry that it is a party political thing because what we need is the PCC who best understands the Police Service and the public's concerns and will fight to retain standards and minimise the effect of cuts, whatever his/her political beliefs.
Mark Burns-Williamson has years of senior Police Authority experience and promises to stand against cuts to front line policing, keep officers on the beat, back swift action on antisocial behaviour, be tough on crime and its causes and to preserve the operational independence of the police. You can find out more by googling markforwycommissioner. OK he is the Labour candidate and this is a conservative ward but please have a look and a think and see if you agree with me that he is the best option!

Mark will be in Keighley on 2 occasions before the election and I'll post the details when they are available so you can come and heckle if you want to. But only in a civilised conservative Silsden manner of course!

If Respect add a last minute candidate I will vote for who I think can beat them. If they do stand Labour wont win because Respect will take their vote, but whatever as long as people who share extreme views dont get in.

Sounds all too political for my liking;

Too few officers on the ground + too many chiefs + constantly increasing population = Reduced confidence in the police force.

Mark Burns Williamson the Labour Police Commissioner candidate will be in the constituency next Monday October 29th.

After an afternoon listening to voters in Keighley he'll speak at a Public Meeting at the Keighley Community Centre (that's the Old Police Station, appropriately) from 7.00 - 8.00.

This is a chance(probably the only one) for Silsden and other Craven Ward residents to express their concerns about the future of local front line policing before the Commissioner election on 15th November.

Even if you'd usually rather die than vote a for Labour candidate in any election please come and hear Mark speak at this meeting. Join in the debate if you are at all concerned about the issues of anti-social behavior, petty crime and the need for visible police presence at relevant times and places in Craven ward etc etc.

Tell your friends and neighbours. These really aren't party political issues, they are community wide ones and we need someone who will manage a limited police budget for the benefit of residents and resist further cuts in essential frontline staff.

See you under the blue lamp? Now then, now then!

Well I think I might have a look at the Independent candidate instead of politicians.

gazzer I read the link, a bit airy fairy I thought. To be honest I think the whole thing is a waste of money at a time when police numbers are being cut the government want to pay 42 people a £100000 a year, its indians we need not chiefs. Also I understand that 21 million people will recieve a leaflet explaining a bit more about this, another waste of money, how much is that costing?

But doesn't this mean that a load of other chiefs disappear? That's what I understood. Accountable to 1 person, not a committee of many?

not sure about a load of other chiefs disappearing,I don't think anyone knows enough about it to make a decision on who to vote for.I am not impressed that the candidates are political, the four of them were on look north tonight responding to a question about what they would do about drug dealing they say they will not bring politics into the role but the labour candidate started his answer by blaming the conservative government, the conservative candidate was slightly better but still wishy washy, the independent was a policeman for 30 years so I suppose he is the best one to know the job thats required and he is independent, the last one, liberal I think, stumbled over his words and did not really say anything.i doubt many people will actually bother to vote, I have not decided yet but if I do I think it will be for the ex policeman even though it galls me to think of the massive pension he will already be getting then another £100000 if he wins

I see our new police commisioner has decided he needs a deputy who will earn over a grand a week.
According to Radio Leeds yesterday, if you fancy the job there is an important pre condition you will have to meet.
You have to be a fully paid up member of the Labour party in West Yorkshire!!!!!!
