G'day Silsden friends,
I've recently discovered that my great-grandfather (Wakeman) was born in "Spring Gardens, Silsden" on Christmas Day, 1866. His parents were married in Bromsgrove (Worc.) eight years earlier, where his father and grandfather were nailmakers. His father continued as a nailmaker after the couple moved to Silsden. A few years later the family emigrated to America.
Where is Spring Gardens in relation to Silsden and does anyone know whether this name would have referred to the same locality in 1866?
Also, is there someone who can point me to information about the nailmaking industry around Silsden in the 1860s? Thanks very much.

Thanks, Gazzer.
I've tried what you said, but "bd20odj,uk" isn't recognised for some reason - Google Earth just reports "your search produced no results".
Oh, well, thanks for trying... maybe some old-fashioned directions instead?

Sorry it took so long for me to return to Silsden.net, but here I am. If you're still around and interested in WAKEMANs, you can contact me at Lee.Weller@internode.on.net
BTW, I've discovered that in addition to my gg-gfather Cephas Wakeman (and family), his younger brother Albert and his wife also moved to Silsden from Bromsgrove (Worc.). Although Cephas emigrated to America, Albert and wife Harriet saw out their years in Silsden.
With good wishes, Lee |

With good wishes, Lee Hi Lee, It might have taken a while for you to respond , But Im delighted you did. We are related. Cephas was 4th of 7 children (2nd son). I descend from the eldest son. I have tons of info on all their descendants, opening boxes now, so I can share and update the Tree. Will communicate to your email later today. PS Thanx to Peter for letting me know. |
