IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Most of you will have read the neighbourhood watch newsletter sent last month that mentioned many crimes in our area that involve two methods that burglars use to gain entry to a property, namely 'Lock Snapping' and 'Lock Bumping', I am taking a guess that the average Joe or Josephine doesn't know what these terms mean! I have been a victim of lock bumping (when I lived in the Midlands) so I know a fair bit about these methods. I want to share my little bit of knowledge so you can prevent this happening to you. Both of these methods can only be done on Euro Cylinder locks, the type used in UPVC doors

LOCK SNAPPING - This is a method that does exactly what it says on the tin. The cylinder lock is exposed on your door by removing the plate that goes round the handle and lock, the exposed part of the lock is then grabbed with pliers or similar and, if twisted and pulled with sufficient force, it will snap the lock in two, the lock is useless and entry is gained. This method will obviously show signs of a forced entry.

LOCK BUMPING - This one is a bit more complicated to explain but if you post a reply and want it in detail I can! With this method the burglar needs a key that is cut in a specific way, when this key is jammed into the cylinder lock it will confuse the mechanism inside the lock and open it. Inside the lock there are pins set on springs, the job of your own house key is to make all the pins go flat in the cylinder in a straight line, lock bumping does this also. The problem with this method is that there will be NO visible signs of entry and if a burglar is clever and tidy you may not know you've been a victim of this crime till way after its happened.

The good news is that both of these methods can be stopped by replacing your locks with anti snap and anti bumping locks which are readily available at large hardware stores for about £20.

I hope someone finds this info useful and if I can stop anyone having to go through the heart-break and inconvenience of a burglary, then I am a happy man!

Dogcatcher - I am also very happy to help any resident of Silsden with the measuring and fitting if need be, I just didn't want to say it as I'm very new to this site and nobody will know me from Adam, do you have neighbourhood watch meetings that I could introduce myself?

Ockin - these methods are readily available to read about on the internet if you want to look for them, infact they go into alot more detail. I'm sure if you were inclined to break into peoples property, you wouldn't immediately look on silsden.net. The best form of protection about any form of crime is to understand it and know about it.

All good advice! But don't forget 1 in 4 (Burglaries) are through an open door, or window, even when you are in the house keep ALL doors and accessible windows locked.

I keep a baseball bat handy and if it gets to a point that I have to confront the intruder then my very large kitchen knife will be used I have a wife and children in my house and any scum bag who thinks they can invade my home will be carried out in a box shocked 8O three events in manchester prove that the law at last is on the home owners side.

With you on that one localman, we have finally caught up with USA, where anyone entering someone's house to burgle can be shot dead if necessary, to protect the residents.
All the police do is come to collect the body and take it away....end of problem.

As far as I'm concerned, it will always be the tip! Doesn't need a high-falutin name like "the green"!
