If you have a cylinder of helium and you use its entire content to fill a large balloon you could expect the balloon to float away with the ability to carry the cylinder, Why then dosen't the cylinder that the helium came in float away too ??? |

that's easy. Once you have filled the ballon the cylinder is empty so it's lighter. Oh hang on..!!!!....my head hurts |

Mass of helium + cylinder is greater than the mass of air it displaces, despite the helium being very light,so it just sits there doing not a lot. Mass of Balloon + helium is much lighter than the air it displaces, so it toddles off sharpish in an upward direction. Mass of cylinder + remaining helium / air is still greater than the air it displaces, so it continues to sit there doing nothing. You can substitute Weight for Mass - no practical difference but less scientific. |

Maybe turn the tap on the cylinder then light it with a lighter to test if the cylinder floats. Doggy have you got a light boy |

same applies to me after a large bowl of hillbillys roadkill stew,when i have terrible wind i can blow a balloon up and float away, but stay on the ground full of it  |

I would suggest that if any gas is allowed to fill a larger volume it is the less dense and therefore lighter, i.e. hot air balloons rise because the hot air inside them is lighter than the colder air outside so the rise. |

It is compressed helium gas, not liquid, in the cylinder (helium boils at -269 deg C!). You can wave a lighter at it as much as you like - it doesn't burn. That's why it replaced hydrogen (which makes very loud bangs) in balloons. |
