Anyone know why there was a VOSA van mooching about the bypass yesterday for several hours, between Kildwick and Steeton? |

Vehicle Operating Standards Agency think it is, marked up like Highways Agency.
Think they check fuel, MoT, tax that sort of thing. But he was on his own, may have been just skiving |

They were checking for red diesel, they checked me. I don't use red diesel, or seatbelts, so i escaped the red diesel issue but not the seatbelt issue. £30 and a lecture. I told him i smoked aswell and did he want to lecture me on that.................he didn't. |

I am old enough to decide for myself wether or not i wear a seatbelt. I have had 7 tickets in total over about 4 years, it's a fair price to pay for the ratio of days driven versus cost in fines. We all have gripes about unnecessary police attention/silly laws..... and the wearing of a seatbelt is my gripe, but you can disagree as you obviously do. |

Just curious Keith, was he accompanied by the police?
If not didn't know they could issue tickets, always thought they had to be accompanied. |

I wasn't trying to be arsey, i just think it's my choice. The option isn't "wear a seatbelt or die". I agree it would be better for my health i just find it a pain in the backside that i can't make that decision. Smoking and drinking costs a lot more to accomodate but for some reason that doesn't get banned......
i know - stick to the topic |

so Keith Lemon, would you wear a seat belt if you were sitting in the back of a car, just so you could protect those in the front seats who you might kill if you crashed into the back of their heads in the event of a head on crash? |

Keithlemon, not to wear a seatbelt is your choice, you agree that if you are involved in an accident your more likely to receive greater injuries, therefore why should my tax be used to repair you? When the bulk of the damage is caused by your our decision not to take sensible actions that would save you. |

So why, if cigs and beer kill more people than car accidents don't the government ban both? Coz they only "nanny" (or fine us) coz we are easy targets. ........and i can honestly say, i have not been in the BACK of a car for umpteen years, so the chance of me killing someone by being a back seat passenger is vitualy nil. I am a delivery driver who only ever drives alone. When i have the wife and kids in the car they all wear seatbelts. The chance of me needing NHS treatment for a smoking related cause must be 20 times more likely but no one fines me for smoking, the government only "advises" that. |

The Law is the Law! It is not allowed for the public to decide which Laws they will uphold and which they will ignore, if you get caught breaking the Law then take the penalty and don't moan about it. |

I hardly think it's the crime of the century.
I am sure we all see far greater offences committed daily, in particular in Bradford that get ignored! |

vosa only seem to target the olicence holders not the theives trailing round in their vans or the gipsies who dont have the appropriate licences for doing what they are doing vosa will have the power to issue on the spot fines this year so another tax gatherer for mr brown |

Mr Melon broke the law - that is a fact, it doesn't really matter whether he or any one else feels it is right or wrong, he broke the law. Surely it is wrong, and sends out the wrong example, for some of you to seem to support his actions. Grandads totally right with what he says about his money paying for Mr Melon to be treated in the case of an accident. The argument about smoking is a worthless one - two wrongs don't make a right. I stand by my statement that Mr Melon should have been punished more heavily. |

Fines only have to be paid if you break the law. Therefore fines are not 'another tax gatherer', you have the choice of whether you pay them - if you don't wish to pay them, don't break the law. |

I think smoking should be banned while driving, it's more dangerous that using a phone.
Saw a North Yorks council wagon this morning with the driver trying to light his pipe! |

mr lemon,i've got a much better solution to your rather expensive freedom of choice. do what i've done for years.pull your seatbelt out to it's maximum length, slip a close peg (i have a nice chrome one that matches my dashboard trim) over the belt where it comes out of the side trim and hey presto! you look like you're wearing one when really it's of as much use as a chocolate fireguard. |

claymoaning - I have to ask what you mean by 2 wrongs making a right? If i smoke and you have to pay for my treatment on the NHS, tell me again....... 1) why i'm allowed to smoke at all or..... 2) why am i not fined for potentially causing myself harm, like when i refuse to wear a belt. The NHS would pay for either crash injuries or smoking related treatment so why am i allowed to do 1 thing and not the other legally? |
