Does anyone know of a Internet Security package that is offered free or cheap? I currently have 'Norton' which is due to expire and I believe that it will be about £30 to renew. I am not a computer wizard so no technical responses thanks, I am just after something to keep the computer 'safe'. Any advice would be welcome.happy :)

Be very careful when Norton expires 'ciderman', don't try to take it off if you don't know what you are doing.

Norton is a pain if you try and remove it!

AVG (same as everyone else) is good.. It's free and simple to install. I can vouch for it finding viruses. Click here to download
free.avg.com/download?prd=afe

However this is only anti virus software, is you current programme also offering firewall protection. if so this would be a good FREE replacement. ZONE ALARMS

click on this link, and when the page loads choose the button to your right of the screen to download the free basic option..

I've used Norton for over 10 years and never had any bother, even when we used to have a business with 5 computers at one time (not now). You only get what you pay for, and it's good value. They even overcharged me once, and when I contacted then by email they refunded the amount same day!

You get what you pay for.

The free anti-virus programs will "basically" keep your system safe but don't always have the full features, updates and scans have to be made manually. If the AV signatures are not kept updated and the programs is not scanning everything coming in and out of your PC your AV program is useless.

These days all AV programs do a good job at detecting viruses but they do not detect malware/spyware. These are the little devils that can phone home with your identity. They are a real pain to get rid of and it may mean re-installing your operating system - best to get a good anti-spyware program. There are some good free anti-sypware programs, but as the AV programs they revert to manual updates after the trial has run out.

Personally I wouldn't use Norton or McAfee, these are anti-virus suites which are ok but slow your pc down considerably - better than nothing if they are kept up-to-date.

This is what I mean by a suite of programs - anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, email checker, in fact jack of all trades and ........ Some of the things it does you may not actually need eg a software firewall when you have probably got the windows firewall enabled anyway and if you have a router there will probably be a hardware firewall.

But it does the job for most even if your computer goes slow.

So you didn't get the automatic update from Norton which changed al the .exe files to .lnk (links) which made the computer unusable? My brother did which cost him a rebuild of his system and about a week of lost work!

I must be missing something here, my computer goes like the clappers, I've had all the automatic updates, and never had a scrap of bother with Norton. For me it's worth paying £30 a year for peace of mind. Sometimes I don't renew the subscription and buy the latest version at PC World for the same price, it's always worth checking their special offers.

Whatever works for you, and they all work until you get a virus, or worst some spyware.

None of the products will give 100% protection against the nasties. The common problem I come across when I fix computers with virus problems is the AV product installed has not been updated making it next to useless. Once spyware gets into a computer it can do things like stop you installing programs to fix the problem. The only solution to get rid of the problem may be to reinstall the operating system and losing your programs and data.

Make sure you have a backup of all your documents on your pc, including your email, and all those precious pictures.

When you realise you have a virus/malware problem it may be too late.

I use Panda and pay for it. Not a lot, but it is updated about every time I log on. I think it came as a freeby for a year with the computer and I just continued with it. It works.

While it is not on the shelves here, being Spanish in origin it is on supermarket shelves in Spain! including the Spanish PC World (slightly different name, but same colours as PC World and owned by DSG)

Don't let your anti-virus and anti-malware software get out of date, there are some nasties lurking on the internet.

The particular nasty described here is malware (spyware) and if you get something like this on your computer it is likely to cost more money than a good anti-nasty program to put right. You may lose all your data in the process of curing the problem so be warned. Back up your data today.

Have a read of this, it should help you get the cobwebs off your wallet: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7907635.stm

The best free anti virus is Antivir. It is far and away better than all the other free ones. It does unfortunately 'nag' you to upgrade to the paid for version, but you can turn off the nag if you find the instructions on the internet.

I personally use Avast (which is 2nd best free one) because I don't like being nagged and don't feel I should disable the nag without buying the full paid for version.

Also get a hardware router with a built in firewall, MUCH better protection than the built in Windows firewall.
