Their are 65 million people in this country of which just under 29 million are working. All together there are 8.05 million not working of working age (age 16 - 64 yrs), of these 1.61 million receive employment allowance. There are 448,000, vacancies according to the national statistics. www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=12 So doesn't it make sense to let the elderly especially those in heavy work in manufacturing or stressful jobs retire early and give the chance for the younger generation. As for cost we are paying to keep our youth unemployed too.

When you have been paid off early you learn a lot about work. You also learn a lot about time and how to fill it. Reading is cheep and you learn a lot. You also think a lot.

This is what I have learnt.

There are thousands of labour saving devices yet the working week is much the same as it was 50 years ago. If work matched the labour saving device then everyone would need to work about 25 hours a week for a living wage.

Trouble is that international transport it one of the 'labour saving' areas greatly improved. If everyone on the planet was paid the same, and why not? then everyone could work for about 20/25 hours a week and we would all be happy.

Trouble is it ain't an even world.

Must stop reading science fiction and politics.

What Littleknownme is saying is a load of rubbish!!!! Many of the young unemployed are because they choose to be so,many say they wont take jobs because the pay isnt good enough or the job isnt good enough. They do not believe in starting at the bottom and working their way up to the top, many think everything should be handed to them on a plate.Yes I do except the majority want work but making everyone leave work at 60 wont give young people jobs, will they just go along and be fully qualified and experienced??NO.I would like to retire early but I wont be able to afford to.

Must agree with all that's been said so far.
My 10 penneth follows.
I honestly think that if you have worked and paid into the system, you should be able to retire on a decent pension. If you haven't contributed, well tough. I do not agree with people getting whatever they call it for doing sod all.
I remember years ago my boss saying "there are unemployed and unemployable".There is a huge difference.
Heard recently that youngsters were being taught in school how to claim benefits!!!!!
Where will this country and economy end up.
Sorry, could go on forever, to no avail. The system is totally at fault, and they ain't gonna listen to the likes of me.

When there were enough jobs for everyone leaving school the number of work shy was very small.

As people do not really change one must assume that the majority leaving school and not finding a job are not actually work shy. They just cannot find a job because there are no the jobs for them

Where are big employers who soaked up the labour in the past? China, India etc.

If people stopped buying imported tat and only bought home made tat there would be plenty of work.

Of course prices would have to rise for a lot of things as they would no longer be made by semi slave labour in foreign parts. But as everyone would be employed that would be all right, would'nt it.

There is another way to soak up labour. Let's start a war. Conscription makes sure that even the workshy do their bit.

Yes, lets get back to the good old days of full employment. World War 2.

Yes Mr. Tolpuddle when there were plenty of jobs people leaving school did fill them. The difference now is that there is so much money and benefits to be had if they can't be bothered.
I agree that abroad jobs are filled abroad but in a place like China skilled jobs are filled for £12 per day and I would'nt want to see that here.
Surely there is a middle way.

Looking at the figures it's obvious there are not enough jobs to go round. China is now the 2nd major economy things aren't going to get much better in the future. Australia is closer to China so that is probably going to see a greater increase in their standard of living, we may fall way behind as our better educated and skilled workforce move on.

I don't think everyone should leave work at 60 but those who are body weary because of hard graft or stressed jobs. At the moment their pensions have been whittled away and employers are reluctant to let them retire early. Training our young ones is a better option and who better to train them than those who are retiring. Years ago that is what happened now the old and weary are expected to do the same as the young and able. I'm not one to condemn the majority of our young ones for a small minority who won't work, most are only to willing.

Perhaps one of our teachers can verify that about 'Claiming Benefits' being taught in our curriculum, I haven't found evidence of this.

Full employment works in everyone's favour, so why can't our young unemployed be given meaningful life developing skills by doing gainful employment, sharing what jobs are available now. Surely in a wealthy country like Britain this is easily affordable.

obviousley there are 2 types of unemployed
those who want a job and those who dont
if your claiming dole you should be found something to do
that would stop the lazy just claiming dole
they would think might aswell get a proper job with more money

Don't you read the news it was the bankers that got us into this mess, the bankers who support the Tory party not the Labour party. This country is no where near bankrupt. We have always been in debt since the 2nd world war. This Labour party paid more of this debt off than any party has since then but the banking crisis stopped that. If this government had listened to Cameron and done nothing this country would actually be bankrupt and we would be paying for massive unemployment again as we did in the 80's and 90's. Then they wouldn't have had the money to pay benefits so society would have been in dire straights. Is that what you want? Community breakdown, you might not believe it but most people work hard in this country as the figures above prove. I think you're going off the subject a bit and turning this into party politics. Is that allowed?

If anybody watches young Dan Snow and hist history of the navy one will jave jearnt that the contry has been in debt since 1710 when the Bank of England was created to lend to the government. Same system today.
Actually the wealth and power of the country is all down to weather. Lots of rain, good grass, fat sheep, lots of wool, ships to trade, needed a good navy, industrial techniques developed to build nave, industrial revolution, changed the world.
It is generally agreed that the next world problem will be water. What do we have plenty of. Yep, water.
God is an Englishman.

Thankyou tolpuddle for teaching me something I didn't know, also for thinking outside the box. I live in hope for the future.

Thankyou also for showing we need to keep our minds open and sometimes our views have to change so we can adapt.
