Have a look at this
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1300824/Co-op-refuses-serve-soldier-uniform-return-Afghanistan.html

Maybe we should join in the boycott of the Co-op, until someone sees sense!

I shouldn't worry about it, the Co-Op was one Down South and tbe Daily Mail seems to have a "thing" about these sort of stories - see

Perhaps we do and perhaps we don't, but what has that got to with supermarkets not serving alcohol to people in uniform?

there's a lack of respect for people in uniform...people have short memories, and these guys/girls are putting their lives on the line most days. I just get angry when jobsworths lay down their own version of the law, and they have no idea of what goes on in the rest of the world. And they get away with it!
A bit like the bus drivers who won't take blind people with guide dogs on their buses because Muslim passengers object...another sad change for the worst, even though it's legal for the blind person to do it.

The followig was copied from a forum re when a landload / off licence can refuse to sell alcohol:

Here is the complete list as given to me when I was running bars 6 years ago (UK).
1. Anyone under the age of 18 (16-18s can drink a limited amount with a meal) AND anyone you suspect to be buying drink for under 18s.
2. Anyone you suspect to be under the influence of drink or drugs already (this is a nice catch-all for Friday nights!)
3. Any member of the emergency services in uniform (fire, ambulance, coast guard, police).
4. Known prostitutes - a weird one this, but has to do with the laws governing prostitution and brothels. Basically they shouldn't be allowed to solicit in bars, but as their working hours are flexible they have to be denied at all times.
You can legally serve 'barred' people as they are denied drink at the landlord's discretion, not by the law. Some bars have particular policies on work clothes/football colours/hi visibility clothing etc - but again these are the landlord's preference and not legally binding. You may get fired but you won't get prosecuted!

These laws also apply to off licences so you can see where the problem of serving people in uniform comes from - it's more than their jobs worth (supermarket employees) to serve someone in uniform. The law appears to apply to people wearing an emergency service uniform - fire, police, medical, but it filters down to the girl on the check out as "alcohol cannot be served to anyone in uniform"

Can you blame them for not serving prohibited groups when Trading Standards send under age teenagers and the like to try to buy alcohol? sad :(

The law kind of makes sense. But shouldn't people in uniform be "Responsible" and not drink whilst on the job?

@Peter if trading standards didn't send teenagers into off licenses then we would still be see kids walking out with carling in hand out of certain shops in silsden.
Now they just get their adult friend to get it!

that wasn't the point I was making. However, I do think some of the tactics of Trading Standards verge on entrapment.

Possibly, but how else are they going to test whether stores are obeying the law without testing them?
I remember vaguely a teenager they sent into a certain silsden store come out in tears due to the telling off she received for trying to buy alchol!

The co-op also do (or at least did) there own testing. Area managers would send a teenager in to stores just as trading standards would. The difference being the member of staff would get a telling off instead of being prosecuted for failing.

Obviously the 'uniform' rule being mis-interpreted. However, why is there this rule in the first place?

In this day and age where people travel to work in cars and possibly in their uniform from home then they, like everyone else, are just as likely to pop into the shop on the way home.

One of these rules that had something behind it in the past, but everyone has forgotten what the reason is, just the rule, interesting.

can NOT must. Unless this is a misquote it is obvioulsy a management has final decision situation - however as the quality of 'management' in the UK is hopeless then it is obvious why this happens.

Those can DO those who cannot MANAGE

When the revolution comes, we can start serving people in uniform again...what a load of rubbish in some of our laws.
On second thoughts...if there is a military takeover one day, we'll have to serve them!wink ;)
