At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : Post Office closure |

It would be a real blow if Silsden PO was closed. One would have thought it would be doing all it could to get business and keep the goodwill of customers? However whilst I was waiting for it to open one lunchtime last week five people came calling (in 15 minutes) and on finding it shut went away and probably didn't return, I saw two of them driving off. One of them expressed their opinion that it was rather "old-fashioned" to close for lunch. Thinking about it I have to agree, lunchtime is the time when a lot of people might manage to pop into the Post Office. I'd hate to see it close down. ![]() |

It would be sad as many folk rely on it.... That said, I must admit to not using it very much nowadays. I don't send many parcels and can get pretty much everything else they sell e.g. fishing licences, stamps etc, on-line. The last time I went to use it, on a Tuesday I believe, it was shut along with every other Post Office in the county apparently. Yer makes yer bed and all that! |

The government has been whittling away at the Post Office facilities for years. More and more of the services they provided have been actively removed eg pension payment, child benefit, road tax to name just a few. In many areas the Post Office is the ONLY shop/point of contact in a community and then the government say our local Post Office must close because it is not a viable business. Is it any wonder they are not profitable when the Post Office has been systematically destroyed. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) I do agree with Fred 100%, particularly as I have to go to Co-op for a TV licence for my son at uni, and can't get one at the post office. More services should be actively given back to them. EVERY village and town SHOULD have a post office whether it loses money or not, it's a vital part of the community. BUT we do like to worry in Silsden, no one has even suggested that ours is to close YET. IF they do I hope we get our acts together and support it staying open, not just complain on here! |

silsden is a big town they would never do away with are post office |

You must live in a different universe to me 'silsdenboy'. If Silsden has no need to worry, why are Bradford councillors already fighting against the possibility of Ilkley or Addingham closing? We need to keep our eye on the ball! |

There was an interesting interview on the radio this morning related to the postal strike. There were two people interviewed. One chanted the 'PO must become more efficient' mantra without any practical observations. The other though was the MD of UK Mail, one of the 'private mail' companies. Now he was very categoric that only Royal Mail had the organisation in place to deliver the 'final mile' and was quite happy to use it and pay for it. Evidently it is in the collecting, sorting and distribution to the final delivery points that there is competition. It really shows the poor management at the Post Office because they are making a mess of the element they do control, the 'final mile' delivery. Dropping all second deliveries evidently is not the way to run an efficient business. So this got me thinking, and the following might be heresy to a lot of people, but here goes: Why cannot other approved business, open longer than the PO take in mail to large to go into mail boxes. The CoOperative for instance? Why cannot the Skipton building society, or any financial institution carry out many of the Post Offices financial functions. I am sure the Skipton could provide a road fund tax disc as efficiently as the PO. |

The trouble is 'wahiba' that lots of things have been taken off the post office, or can be done online. Such as the tv licence and road tax. Leave the Skipton to do what they do best I need them for my old age! |
