This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Hi

You may have received a letter & associated information regarding inclusion of your health records in the NHS Summary Care Records.

You can choose whether or not you want your health records to be included. Opting in is automatic but if you want to opt out there is a form to complete which isn’t included in the information pack.

For further information and an opt out form please see - frontierpsychiatrist.co.uk/nhs-summary-care-record/

personaly i think opting out is silly
if your out of the area and in hospitol if your details are on the system they can tell what meds your on what your alergic to etc and complete medical history

the only reason i can see anyone opting out is if they think the world is turning into the novel 1984 the government knows everything and there out to get me

If anybody needs any reassurances. Staff that will have access to this system, get a "smart card" to access this system. for which you have training and you only get when have proven your identity through personal and work photo ID's, this card also has a unique pass number that only the card user knows. You are sponsored through your NHS trust to ensure you need to have access as it is a vital part of your role. And then the system is set up to flag up any occaisions when you look up patients who are out of your demographic or work related area. i.e. I work with 18-64 year old females so if i look out of theses critieria unless I could prove I have good reason I would get a disiplinary or the sack.

For me professionally this system will be good, at present if a patient comes in we know very little about we can find out where there GP is and contact them but then what happens early during the night or at weekends, we have to wait for the suregery to open and get them to fax information to us. Where as when the system is fully up and running we can find out treatments, medications, allergies a lot quicker and be able to treat people faster and safer.

As such I have no problem with my details being on the system, it can only be a help if I ever have an emergency or even attend hospital as they don't have a comprehensive record of all my treatments like my GP surgery does.

hmmmm!
From this source www.thebigoptout.com/?page_id=3

You will eventually be allowed to ‘lock down’ some of your medical details (though the security mechanisms haven’t been built yet). But although you can keep some of your medical details confidential from some of the doctors involved in your care, they can override this if they think it’s necessary, and there is no way for you to keep your information confidential from civil servants. You will no longer be able to attend any Sexual Health or GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine) Clinic anonymously as all these details will also be held on this national database, alongside your medical records. For the first time everyone’s most up-to-date and confidential details are to be held on one massive database.

sooooo..... a bit like councils have abused the anti terrorist act to use the CCTV system (to spy on parents parents to see if they qualify for a school admission place). Wait for the government work out how to join the computer systems up. ID scheme by the back door?

There must be something similar already in place localy because last time I went to the GP Emergency medical center (next to A&E) at Airedale they asked for permission to access my medical records and had everything there that my GP had.

I don't have a problem with that, but on a national basis I don't trust the government to keep the records safe or NOT to abuse the system.

I tend to agree with you Peter, the government have an appalling record when it comes to delivering big IT projects. But the principle is sound, it's just the risks of abuse and likelihood of failure and huge overspending that are the problems.
