Lack of provision for youths (in Silsden) - this is a headline in the Keighly News www.keighleynews.co.uk/news/news_aire/4048642.print/ quote So what is there for the youth of Silsden to do on a Friday and Saturday night, and what can we do to help them find something to do? |

Its really the police saying they cant police Silsden on Friday and Saturday night.Maybe there is a lack of things to do but its upto the police to catch people breaking the law.Since when has nothing to do meant kids can make there own entertainment by drinking and causing damage. I was told by somebody that the police told him to keep his son away from another 17 year old youth because he is trouble and other kids suggest he supplies 15 year olds with drink.I came in contact with this youth just last week and asked where he got drink from and he says he buys it himself even though the shop knows he is only 17. Until somebody comes up with something for kids to do I trust the police will make the streets of Silsden safe. They have no excuse now they know about the problem.I cant understand why it took until last week to realise there is a problem when everyone in Silsden have known for ages.I dont go looking for anti social behaviour but I know the park, the tip,the schools, the youth club and the health centre have problems. Rant over!!! |

I am sick of hearing that there is nothing to do.When I was a teenager I did not have a computer,tv,mobile phone, wii, playstation etc etc. What do these kids want, don't they know how to entertain themselves. If parents took more interest and encouraged them to take up hobbies, sport or other interests we would not have a problem.Instead ,parents just seem to think that by throwing money and gadgets at their kids they are being good parents.Kids need time and love not material things, sadly many parents do not give a damn about what their kids are doing so long as they are out of their way and until the parents are re-educated nothing will change. |

When I were a lad I used to play with guns after school for a couple of hours (CCF), then went home, chnaged and went to Scouts. When I became a Senior Scout it was on Thursday evening. That I remember because I came home one evening to find Kennedy had been shot - yep , I remember where I was when Kennedy was shot. Later I became a Rover and a Leader as things changed. When I move house in the 70s I did not bother to take it up again. No fun in it as the PC brigade were gaining their first foothold. Today I believe one has to prove, at a cost of around £40 to someone, that one is not a danger to children. Not sure how many of these dangerous types out there but as a kid, and a leader into my 30s I never ever came across any real dodgy characters. There were plenty of wierd one, but they were all harmless. So who today is going to put themselves forward as a volunteer with this, and no doubt other hoops to leap through. By the way, if anyone remembers the Tenderfoot, Second Class First Class days then NVQs are a rip off of that system. Copetency assessment by ones peers. I admire those who continue with Scouting today. If they did what we did no doubt someone would soon be sued, in the chokey or both. I am not one for the good old days, but extra controls and excessive paperwork is not always progress. |

40 quid isnt much to pay for c r b check if its work u realy want to do,most employers do pay it.I for one expect that anyone working with children or others on vulnerable posistion to be checked out as best as can be.Most of the kids causing bother wouldnt go to arranged activities even if they were available, its not there thing. Its nice to remember though that there is still plenty of decent kids/youths in Silsden and not all go round wreaking havoc.I drunk alcohol in the parks before I was old enough but didnt smash bottles(couldnt afford bottles)or cause other trouble, just drunk had a laugh, went home.Nothing to do with boredom. |

just been reading about the new police officer in skipton who is tough on anti social behaviour and underage drinking. He asks the offenders for their parents mobile and home numbers then phones them there and then. I think this is a good ploy maybe parents might be more responsible if this happened everywhere |

BUT what IS there for kids to do in Silsden on a Friday and Saturday night? They can't go to the pub because that has been stopped by threat of landlords loosing their licence. In our day we go to the pub and as long as we behaved ourselves and just drank the one pint there was no problem. So they now get someone to buy them cans - it's cheaper than buying posh water - and unsupervised they can get paraletic in the park. I'm sure they would be just as happy to have somewhere warm to go where they could talk and socialise, but where in Silsden on a Friday or Saturaday? Is the Youth club still working? |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) When I was 14 the Youth Club wasnt built and there was nothing to do but I didnt go out and get drunk because I would know about it when I got home and would not dare to get caught by the police.Having nothing to do is no excuse they do it because they can and nobody, police or parents stop them. Kids find stuff to do Sunday to Thursday so why should the weekend be different. If you provided somewhere for them to go they would take drink with them because thats the culture now.As a posters says Skipton now have a police officer who will stop street drinkers and that is the way forward. The West Lothian experiment where you have to be 25 to buy alcohol in an off licence has been a success. |

Why do people see youth as a problem when the majority are great people when you bother to talk to them. A few cause a problem and we assume they are all the same...sad! |

Yes your right Peter it is a minority but that means the majority find something to do.Its a different world now and where we played football in the street kids can play games in their own house with others in their own houses miles away. Many will be chatting to each other on the internet.Their bedrooms will be home to TV's, DVD's in fact any kind of media and entertainment you can think of.To say kids have nothing to do is not a true sentance. |

agreed people saying they have nothing to do is rubbish there is more to do than ever before its just peoples attention spans are smaller and it looks hard & cool aparently to get pissed as a teenager ![]() when we were kids we were in the school yard most nights playing football or round a mates house playing snooker or on the sinclair spectrum 48k/commadore 64/atari 2600 playing computer games (sorry youths we didnt have xbox 360's or PS3's in the early 80's) and yes there actually were computers which only had 48 kilobytes of memory and yes they still managed to make games for them the loading speed was about 5 minutes from an audio cassette ![]() |

The first recorded comments about boozy brits was by the Romans - so nothing really new in that respect. |

there may be cars parked on the footpath by the football ground but these young people that have come in these cars are not fed up playing for this exelent club and TOWN we can`t have it always. |

So we have to accept the boorish behaviour of pavement parking because they play football. There is plenty of space to park, especially at weekends, up towards the industrial estate. Problem is they would have to walk. Reminds one of the people who drive to a gym and then work out on a tread mill!!!!!!!!! |

There must be plenty for the youths to do! Because about 700 of them go to South Craven School everyday from Silsden, and only about 10 to 20 of them are out on the streets on a night causing trouble, why don't these few ask the others where they go? |
![]() |
alan |
Well said 'grandad'. The 'few' would always cause trouble no matter what there was to do. We should be proud of the vast majority of good kids we have in this town, not berate them because of the very few! |

Correct although I would guess 40 rather than 10 to 20 |

Gazzer I would stick with the original figure of 10 to 20, that is of Silsden youths, I would agree there are outsiders who come into town causing bother, often they are the worst as they do not have any respect of the town at all. |
